Over the past 50 years, it has saved more lives in Canada than any other public health intervention. And yet, many adult Quebecers are not up to date with their vaccination schedule - sometimes for lack of information, sometimes simply because they don't know where to go.

Clinique Omicron offers vaccination services for adults and children at several of its locations on the South Shore and elsewhere in Quebec. In this article, we take a look at the main vaccines available and why you shouldn't delay in obtaining them.

Why is vaccination still essential?

Some people mistakenly believe that vaccine-preventable diseases have disappeared, or that vaccines weaken the immune system. Quite the opposite: vaccination harnesses the natural resources of the immune system, teaching it to defend itself before disease strikes.

The pathogens responsible for diphtheria, whooping cough, measles, hepatitis and tetanus are still present in the environment and in certain regions of the world. Protecting yourself also means protecting the vulnerable people around you.

The main vaccines available at Clinique Omicron

Flu vaccine (seasonal flu)

The flu vaccine is recommended every year, as viral strains change from season to season. Its composition is updated annually by the WHO Global Laboratory Network, which identifies new circulating strains. Contrary to a persistent myth, the flu vaccine does not cause influenza.

It is particularly recommended for people aged 60 and over, pregnant women, children aged 6 months to 5 years, people suffering from chronic illnesses, and healthcare workers.

DCAT vaccine: pertussis, diphtheria and tetanus

This combined vaccine protects against three distinct bacterial diseases. Pertussis causes severe coughing fits that can last for several months, and is particularly dangerous in infants. Diphtheria is a highly contagious infection that can block the respiratory tract. Tetanus causes severe muscle contractions that can be fatal if left untreated, and the bacterium is present in the soil - it will never disappear.

The Quebec Immunization Protocol (PIQ) recommends a booster dose every 10 years for adults. Many have forgotten this since they were teenagers.

Hepatitis A and B vaccines

Hepatitis A is common in developing countries, and is transmitted through contaminated food or water. Hepatitis B, found worldwide, is transmitted through blood or unprotected sexual relations. Both can lead to serious liver complications.

These vaccines are particularly important for international travelers, people at risk of occupational exposure, and anyone who was not vaccinated as a child. A combined hepatitis A+B vaccine is available in a series of doses.

The HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine

HPV is one of the most widespread viruses in the world. Some strains can cause genital warts, others cancers of the cervix, penis, throat and anus. The vaccine is most effective when administered before sexual intercourse, but is still recommended according to age and clinical context.

At Clinique Omicron, the HPV vaccine can be administered to girls and boys from the age of 9. Current recommendations in Quebec allow the vaccine to be administered up to the age of 45 for women and 26 for men, depending on clinical indications. An assessment of the vaccination record will be carried out during the consultation.

How do I get a vaccine at Clinique Omicron?

Vaccination appointments are booked quickly via our online form or by telephone. Our nurses will assess your health history to ensure that we recommend the right vaccines for your situation, history and travel plans.

Clinique Omicron has several points of service on Montreal's South Shore, including facilities in Brossard and Saint-Hubert, as well as telemedicine services covering all of Quebec. You can easily access our vaccination services without waiting for a referral from your family doctor.

Frequently asked questions about vaccination

Can the flu vaccine make me sick?

No. The flu vaccine does not contain live virus and therefore cannot cause influenza. Some people experience slight tenderness at the injection site or temporary fatigue, which simply indicates that the immune system is responding to the vaccine.

How often should I renew my vaccines?

It depends on the vaccine. Influenza: every year. DCAT: every 10 years for adults. Hepatitis B: generally a series of 3 doses valid for life. HPV: depending on age and number of doses received. Your healthcare professional will be able to provide you with an update during your consultation.

In short: don't let your protection expire

Vaccination isn't just for children. Adults too have a vaccination schedule to adhere to, and booster shots are often neglected. Whether you want to protect yourself against seasonal flu, prepare for a trip abroad or simply take stock of your preventive health, the Clinique Omicron team is here to help.

Vaccination services - Clinique Omicron

La vaccination est l’un des piliers les plus efficaces de la médecine préventive.
