FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Dermatology

From acne and skin lesions to inflammatory conditions, chronic diseases, and telemedicine—everything you need to know.

Which skin problems can be assessed in dermatology?

A wide variety of skin conditions: mild to severe acne, eczema and atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, rosacea, hives, skin infections (impetigo, fungal infections, warts), pigment spots and moles, hair loss, nail conditions, alopecia areata, seborrheic dermatitis, and various rashes. Our team handles acute and chronic conditions, as well as situations requiring preventive screening.

Do you treat severe acne?

Yes. We treat acne of all degrees of severity, from blackheads to nodular or cystic forms. Treatment may include topical medications (retinoids, antibiotics, benzoyl peroxide), oral antibiotics, or hormonal protocols depending on the patient's profile. Scar prevention is also integrated into the treatment plan. Complex cases may be referred to a specialized dermatologist.

How to know if a mole or spot needs to be monitored?

Use the ABCDE rule to spot warning signs: Asymmetry (the two halves differ), Borders are irregular or poorly defined, Color is uneven or varied, Diameter is greater than 6 mm, Evolving (changing in size, shape, color, or bleeding). If any of these criteria apply, consult a doctor immediately. If in doubt, our team can perform a photographic or in-person evaluation and refer for further tests if necessary.

Do you suggest removing skin lesions?

Yes, according to clinical indication. We can proceed with the removal of benign skin lesions (molluscum contagiosum, warts, soft fibromas, superficial epidermal cysts), cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen, and skin biopsies for laboratory analysis. Each removal is evaluated during a consultation to ensure the procedure is appropriate and safe for your type of lesion.

Can I have a follow-up for a chronic dermatological condition?

Yes, particularly for eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, recurrent acne, or seborrheic dermatitis. Follow-up allows for treatment adjustments based on evolution, management of flare-ups, identification of triggers, and adaptation of care over time. Follow-up consultations can be done in-clinic or via telemedicine depending on your condition and preferences.

Is a teledermatology consultation sufficient to evaluate a skin lesion?

In many cases, yes—especially if clear photos are provided with good lighting from different angles. Teleconsultation is effective for rashes, mild infections, prescription refills, and follow-ups for known conditions. However, some situations require an in-person examination: suspicious lesions to biopsy, lesion removal, evaluation of areas that are difficult to photograph, or conditions where palpation is clinically necessary.

What is eczema and how to treat it?

Eczema (or atopic dermatitis) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by intense itching, dry skin, and red patches, often located on the creases of the elbows, knees, neck, and face. Treatment involves intensive hydration, topical corticosteroids during flare-ups, daily emollients, and identification of triggers (soaps, detergents, allergens, stress). Advanced therapeutic options exist for moderate to severe forms.

What is psoriasis and can it be cured?

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that causes thick, red, scaly plaques, often on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back. It is not contagious. There is no definitive cure, but many treatments effectively control the symptoms: topical corticosteroids, vitamin D analogues, phototherapy, and systemic medications for severe forms. Regular monitoring is essential to adjust treatment.

How to prevent the recurrence of fungal skin infections?

Fungal infections (skin mycoses, athlete's foot, nail fungus) frequently recur without adequate preventive measures. Key advice includes: keeping skin clean and dry, especially in areas of friction and folds; wearing socks made of natural fibers and breathable shoes; avoiding walking barefoot in public areas (pools, showers); fully treating each episode for the prescribed duration; and refraining from sharing towels, shoes, or nail clippers.

What is rosacea and how to control it?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition characterized by persistent redness of the face (nose, cheeks, forehead, chin), visible blood vessels, and sometimes inflammatory bumps. It is aggravated by certain triggers: heat, sun, alcohol, spices, stress, and some cosmetics. Treatment includes appropriate topical treatments, oral antibiotics for flare-ups, rigorous sun protection, and identification of personal triggering factors.

Are dermatology consultations covered by the RAMQ?

Medical consultations for diagnosed dermatological conditions are generally covered by the RAMQ when performed by a participating physician. Certain procedures (removal of cosmetic lesions, non-medically necessary care) may be billed separately. Consult our Pricing section or contact the clinic for the terms applicable to your situation.

How do I make an appointment for a dermatology consultation?

You can book an appointment online through our booking portal, by phone at 514 606-3350, or by email at info@cliniqueomicron.ca. Please bring your medical history, a list of your current medications, and, if possible, photos of the skin condition taken in good lighting. For a telemedicine consultation, prepare clear photos taken from different angles.
