FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Gynecology

From screenings to hormonal disorders, pelvic pain, infections, contraception, and telemedicine — everything you need to know.

When should you consult a gynaecologist?

Consult a gynecologist if you experience persistent pelvic pain, abnormal menstrual bleeding (heavy, irregular, between periods), symptoms of vaginal infection (unusual discharge, irritation, odor), discomfort during sexual intercourse, hormonal concerns (severe PMS, menopause symptoms), or for regular preventive check-ups including a Pap smear. A preconception consultation is also recommended before pregnancy.

Do you offer cervical cancer screening (Pap test)?

Yes. The Papanicolaou test (Pap test) is performed in our clinic according to Quebec recommendations: generally every 3 years for women aged 21 to 65 who are sexually active. It helps detect abnormal cells in the cervix before they become cancerous. Screening for STBBIs (including HPV) can be combined based on your profile. Our team will explain the results and provide the necessary follow-up.

Do you treat vaginal infections?

Yes. We manage common and recurrent vaginal infections, including: yeast infections (vulvovaginal candidiasis), bacterial vaginosis, vaginitis (trichomoniasis, atrophic vaginitis), and irritations. We identify the cause, provide targeted treatment, and assist you in preventing recurrence. In cases of recurrent infections, further investigation may be necessary to identify predisposing factors.

Can I discuss my birth control via telehealth appointment?

Absolutely. Teleconsultation is ideal for discussing different contraceptive options, assessing which best suits your needs (pills, patch, vaginal ring, hormonal or copper IUD, implant, emergency contraception), managing side effects, or adjusting your current method. However, the physical insertion of an IUD or implant requires an in-person consultation.

Do you help with menopausal symptoms?

Yes. We assess your menopausal symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, sleep disturbances, mood swings, decreased libido) and propose a personalized management plan. This may include hormone replacement therapy (HRT) depending on your risk profile, non-hormonal options, lifestyle advice, and long-term follow-up. Perimenopause is also managed from the first symptoms.

Is a gynecological teleconsultation sufficient for certain follow-ups?

Yes, for menstrual, hormonal, and contraceptive monitoring, laboratory result analysis, menopause symptom management, prescription-based STD screening, and evaluation of mild vaginal infections. An in-person consultation is still necessary for Pap smears, IUD insertion or removal, acute pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, or any gynecological physical examination.

What is endometriosis and how can you recognize it?

Endometriosis is a chronic condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus (on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or peritoneum). It affects approximately 1 in 10 women. Typical symptoms include severe pelvic pain (especially during periods), painful intercourse, severe cramps, heavy bleeding, and sometimes fertility issues. Diagnosis is clinical and can be confirmed by imaging or laparoscopy. Specialized follow-up is recommended.

What is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)?

PCOS is a common hormonal disorder in women of reproductive age, characterized by irregular or absent cycles, excess androgens (acne, excessive hair growth), and often polycystic ovaries on ultrasound. It can be associated with insulin resistance and increases the risk of type 2 diabetes. Management includes dietary changes, regular physical activity, hormonal medications, and long-term monitoring according to your goals (cycle regularity, fertility, metabolic health).

How to prepare for a gynecological appointment?

Ideally, schedule your appointment outside of your menstrual period if a Pap smear or vaginal swab is planned. Avoid douching, sexual intercourse, or using intimate products in the 24 to 48 hours prior. Bring your medical and gynecological history, a list of your current medications and contraceptives, and your latest test results if available. Don't hesitate to write down your concerns in advance so you don't forget anything.

Do you offer preconception counseling before a pregnancy?

Yes. Preconception care aims to optimize your health before conceiving: assessment of your general health, medication review, folic acid prescription, vaccination checks (rubella, chickenpox, pertussis), advice on nutrition and lifestyle, genetic screening based on family history, and updating recommended tests. Ideally, this consultation takes place 3 to 6 months before the desired conception.

Are gynecological consultations covered by the RAMQ?

Gynecological medical consultations performed by a participating physician are generally covered by the RAMQ when medically indicated. Certain procedures performed in private clinics may be billed separately. Consult our Pricing section or contact the clinic for the terms applicable to your situation.

How do I make an appointment for a gynecology consultation?

You can book an appointment online through our booking portal, by phone at 514-606-3350, or by email at info@cliniqueomicron.ca. No medical referral is necessary for an initial consultation. Consultations are offered in-clinic or via telemedicine, according to your preference. We welcome you in a confidential, caring environment that is tailored to your reality.
