FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Psychology

Psychotherapy, CBT, anxiety, depression, psychological assessment, reimbursements — everything you need to know about our psychology services at Clinique Omicron.

When should I see a psychologist?

Consult a psychologist if you experience persistent anxiety, prolonged sadness, emotional exhaustion, difficulty managing stress or relationships, if you are going through a difficult time (grief, separation, job loss), if you have intrusive thoughts, or if your daily functioning is affected. You don't need to wait for a crisis to consult – psychology can also support you in personal growth, self-discovery, or prevention. The simple desire to understand your reactions is a valid reason to consult.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychotherapist?

In Quebec, the title of psychologist is reserved for members of the Ordre des psychologues du Québec (OPQ), who hold a doctorate (PhD or D.Psy.) and can conduct psychological assessments, make diagnoses, and offer psychotherapy. The title of psychotherapist can be held by other professionals (social workers, nurses, guidance counselors, etc.) who have completed recognized supplementary training. Both can practice psychotherapy, but only psychologists can conduct formal psychological assessments and neuropsychological evaluations.

What therapeutic approaches do you use?

Our psychologists use evidence-based approaches tailored to your specific needs. The most common include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), effective for anxiety, depression, phobias, and OCD; Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT); EMDR for trauma processing; and Humanistic or Psychodynamic-oriented approaches for in-depth self-work. The choice of approach is discussed with you based on your preferences and therapeutic goals.

How many sessions are required?

The duration of psychological follow-up varies depending on the nature of the request and the objectives. For a targeted issue—such as anxiety management or grief—8 to 15 CBT sessions may be sufficient. For more complex issues or trauma, longer follow-up is generally recommended. Your psychologist will regularly reassess objectives with you. There is no imposed number of sessions; the process is at your pace, depending on your progress and needs. Sessions generally take place weekly or every two weeks.

Do you offer psychological or neuropsychological assessments?

Yes. Our psychologists can conduct psychological assessments to better understand your emotional, behavioral, or cognitive difficulties, and to establish an appropriate intervention plan. Certain neuropsychological assessments (attention, memory, executive functions) may be recommended for suspected ADHD, cognitive disorders, or post-traumatic sequelae. These evaluations are documented in a written report and can be used for school, employer, or insurer purposes as needed. Contact us to verify the availability of these services based on your situation.

How does the first consultation go?

The first meeting (typically 60 to 75 minutes) is an assessment consultation. The psychologist invites you to describe your concerns, personal history, and what brought you to seek help. There are no right or wrong answers—the goal is to understand your experience. At the end of this session, the psychologist will summarize their understanding of the situation, discuss possible goals, and propose a therapeutic approach. You will decide together if this approach is a good fit for you and if you wish to continue. No decisions are imposed after a single meeting.

Can psychology help with burnout and professional exhaustion?

Yes. Burnout is one of the most frequent requests in psychology. Treatment includes identifying professional and personal stressors, cognitive restructuring of beliefs related to perfectionism or performance, strategies for managing priorities and boundaries, and reconstructing meaning and motivation. Psychology also helps prevent relapses by strengthening coping mechanisms. Collaboration with a physician for sick leave and a gradual return to work is possible if necessary.

Do you treat trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)?

Yes. Trauma and PTSD treatment is offered in our department. Our psychologists use recognized approaches such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), trauma-focused CBT, and other stabilization and reconstruction-oriented approaches. The pace of treatment always respects your comfort level – no exposure is imposed without your agreement. Trauma can include recent events (accident, assault) or past experiences (difficult childhood, violence). Inquiries are confidential and non-judgmental.

Are psychological services covered by the RAMQ?

Private psychology services are not covered by RAMQ. However, many private group insurance plans reimburse consultations with a psychologist who is a member of the Ordre des psychologues du Québec (OPQ). Coverage varies depending on your plan—some reimburse between $500 and $2,000 per year. Your employer’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) may also cover several sessions at no cost. Check your coverage with your insurer. Visit our Pricing section or contact us for more information on fees.

Do you offer services for children and adolescents?

Yes, depending on the specialties of the available psychologists. Child and adolescent psychology is for young people experiencing anxiety, academic difficulties, behavioral problems, mood disorders, social challenges, or traumatic experiences. The approach is adapted to age and developmental level. For children, parents are generally involved in the initial assessment and receive recommendations. For adolescents, confidentiality is respected within legal limits. Contact us to inquire about the availability of pediatric services based on our current professionals.

Do I need a medical referral to consult?

No. No medical referral is required to consult a psychologist at Clinique Omicron. You can make an appointment directly, on your own initiative. However, some private insurers may require a medical prescription or a referral note for reimbursement—check with your insurer. If your doctor referred you, bring their note to facilitate communication between the professionals if you consent to it.

How to make an appointment with a psychologist?

You can book an appointment through our online portal, by phone at 514 606-3350, or by email at info@cliniqueomicron.ca. No prescription or referral is required. Briefly describe your situation when booking your appointment so that we can refer you to the most suitable psychologist. Consultations are offered in-clinic and via teleconsultation. In case of immediate distress or suicidal thoughts, please call 9-8-8 (national suicide prevention line) or go to the nearest emergency room.
