Frequently Asked Questions — Sports Medicine
Musculoskeletal injuries, return to sport, injections, PRP therapy, prevention, multidisciplinary approach, teleconsultation — comprehensive answers about our sports medicine services at Clinique Omicron, for amateur athletes, athletes, and individuals in rehabilitation throughout Quebec.
No. Sports medicine at Clinique Omicron is for anyone who is active, whether you are a casual athlete, a weekend warrior, a teen in a sports-studies program, an elite athlete, or someone looking to get back into physical activity after an injury or a long period of inactivity. Our professionals adapt their approach to your profile, your fitness level, and your goals—whether that's to heal an injury, prevent recurrence, better manage persistent pain, or optimize your athletic performance.
Our team manages over 15 types of injuries and conditions related to physical activity: tendinitis and tendinopathy (shoulder, elbow, knee, Achilles tendon), sprains and ligament injuries (ankle, knee, wrist), bursitis (shoulder, hip, knee, elbow), low back pain of muscular, disc, or postural origin, stress fractures and shin splints, overtraining and overuse syndromes, partial muscle tears, chronic joint pain, as well as conditions requiring a structured return-to-sport plan after surgery or prolonged immobilization.
The initial consultation includes a thorough clinical evaluation: collection of medical and sports history, detailed symptom analysis, targeted physical examination of the affected area (range of motion, specific orthopedic tests, strength and stability assessment), and review of available imaging scans if applicable. Based on this assessment, the physician will establish an accurate diagnosis and develop a personalized treatment plan—including recommended treatments, referrals to appropriate allied health professionals, and a sport-specific return-to-sport program tailored to your condition and goals.
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy involves injecting a concentrate of platelets, taken from the patient's own blood, into the injured area. These platelets release growth factors that stimulate natural tissue repair. In sports medicine, PRP is indicated for tendon injuries that are resistant to conventional treatments (chronic Achilles tendinopathy, rotator cuff, epicondylitis), persistent ligament and joint injuries (knee, ankle), as well as certain complex injuries requiring accelerated tissue regeneration. The treatment is performed in a clinic, with no risk of rejection because it is autologous.
Our return-to-sport program is structured in progressive phases, medically validated at each step. It takes into account the nature and severity of the injury, your initial fitness level, your specific athletic demands (type of sport, position, intensity), and your performance goals. In collaboration with our multidisciplinary team — kinesiologist, physiotherapist, chiropractor as needed — we define objective progression criteria (strength, mobility, stability, endurance) before each move to the next phase, to maximize safety and minimize the risk of recurrence.
Yes. Prevention is a central component of our sports medicine services. Our physicians and kinesiologists conduct a comprehensive preventive assessment: analysis of general physical condition, identification of muscle imbalances and biomechanical risk factors, review of training programs, and management of sports load. We then offer a personalized prevention program tailored to your sport—including targeted corrective exercises, advice on hydration, sports nutrition, recovery, and progressive adaptation of training load to prevent overtraining.
Sports medicine care at Clinique Omicron is based on the coordinated collaboration of several professionals depending on your condition: a doctor or nurse practitioner (NP) for diagnosis and prescription, a kinesiologist for functional rehabilitation and prevention, a physiotherapist and chiropractor for manual musculoskeletal care, an osteopath and massage therapist for recovery support, and an occupational therapist if environmental or workplace adaptations are necessary. All these professionals are coordinated around your treatment plan for coherent care with no service gaps.
Yes. Sports medicine teleconsultations are available throughout Quebec via our secure platform. They are suitable for an initial assessment of an injury (to quickly direct you to appropriate care), post-treatment and post-operative follow-ups, adjustments to a rehabilitation program, questions about pain management, sports nutrition, or training load, as well as consultations for athletes in remote regions or those with mobility limitations. Some physical assessments (orthopedic tests, palpation) require an in-person clinic visit — our team will guide you as needed.
Sports medicine services at Clinique Omicron are offered privately, with a receipt provided for insurance purposes. Certain interventions may be covered by the CNESST if the injury occurred in the workplace, or by the SAAQ in the case of a road accident. Group and private insurance often cover all or part of specialized medical consultations, physiotherapy, kinesiology, and paramedical treatments. We recommend checking your coverage with your insurer or the relevant organization before your appointment.
Quickly consult a doctor if you experience: sudden, intense sharp pain during exertion (possible sign of a tear or rupture), rapid joint swelling with functional impairment, a popping or giving out sensation at the time of injury, inability to bear weight on the affected limb, pain that persists at rest or wakes you at night, or any symptoms that worsen despite rest and ice. Muscle soreness after exertion, if mild and temporary, is usually benign – but if it persists beyond 5 to 7 days without improvement, a consultation is recommended.
Yes. Teenagers in sports programs and young athletes have specific needs in sports medicine: their still-growing skeletons make them vulnerable to certain injuries specific to their age group (growth plate injuries, Osgood-Schlatter disease, Sever's disease). Our professionals adapt the evaluation and treatment plan to the physical development profile of the young athlete, while taking into account the demands of their athletic and academic program. Guidance on training load management and overtraining prevention is also offered.
Yes. In collaboration with our kinesiologists, we develop personalized and safe training programs tailored to your level, whether you are a beginner or an advanced athlete. These programs include recommendations on therapeutic and strengthening exercises, optimization of sports movements, prevention of injuries specific to your discipline, training periodization, and practical advice on sports nutrition, hydration, and recovery strategies (sleep, stress management, stretching). Our goal is to enable you to progress sustainably, without exposing you to an unnecessary risk of injury.
