Quebec Innovation: A Portable Device Could Replace Traditional Blood Draws

What if your next blood test results arrived in two minutes, without a needle, from the comfort of your home or a neighborhood clinic? This is precisely what a Montreal-based startup promises, with work that is capturing the attention of the Quebec medical community.

Anasens, founded by Dr. Alexis Vallée-Bélisle, a professor at the Université de Montréal, is developing a portable diagnostic device based on DNA biosensors capable of analyzing biological samples in minutes. At Clinique Omicron, we are closely following these developments because our mission is to offer accessible, effective care centered on patient well-being.

Traditional blood draw: effective, but improvable

Every year, millions of Quebecers undergo a blood draw. This procedure requires trained personnel, sterile equipment, an analysis laboratory, and results can take from a few hours to several days.

How does Anasens technology work?

Synthetic DNA sequences are programmed to specifically bind to a target molecule. When this molecule is present in the sample, the sensor reacts and generates a measurable signal. The portable device delivers a result in minutes, without a central laboratory.

DrugAsens: The First Product

The first product, DrugAsens, detects drugs in saliva. In October 2025, Anasens signed a distribution agreement with the German firm MAVAND to market DrugAsens in Europe and Australia. But the ambition goes further: to measure blood drug concentrations and detect diseases at home.

What that would change

  • Reducing diagnostic delays
  • Best chronic disease tracking
  • Reduced pressure on hospital laboratories
  • Increased accessibility for patients in remote areas
  • Integration possible into telemedicine platforms

These applications are still in the research phase. Before any integration, these devices will need to undergo rigorous clinical validation and approval processes by Health Canada.

What Clinique Omicron envisions

If a wearable biosensor technology obtains the necessary Health Canada approvals and demonstrates clinical efficacy, we would actively consider deploying it at our service points in Quebec, in accordance with professional practices and the standards of the Collège des médecins du Québec.

In the meantime, our existing collection services continue to offer comprehensive and professional support.
