FAQ

Frequently asked questions about neurology

Migraines, numbness, cognitive disorders, neuropathies, vertigo and telemedicine - everything you need to know about neurological care at Clinique Omicron.

When should you consult a neurologist?

Consult a neurologist if you experience frequent or unusual headaches, persistent dizziness or vertigo, numbness or tingling in the limbs, muscle weakness, tremors, problems with memory or concentration, difficulties with balance or coordination, or symptoms suggestive of damage to the nervous system. Any new, severe or worsening neurological symptom deserves prompt evaluation.

Can you help me with chronic migraines?

Yes, chronic migraine (15 days or more per month) requires structured management. We assess your triggers, frequency and intensity of attacks, and propose a therapeutic plan including treatment of the attack (triptans, anti-inflammatories) and preventive treatment (beta-blockers, antiepileptics, antidepressants depending on profile). Advice on lifestyle, stress management and triggers completes the treatment to reduce the frequency and impact of attacks.

Do you feel any numbness or tingling?

Yes, numbness and tingling (paresthesia) can have several neurological origins: peripheral neuropathy (diabetic, alcoholic, inflammatory), nerve compression syndrome (carpal tunnel, ulnar, sciatica), spinal cord damage or central cause. We carry out a full clinical evaluation and, if necessary, refer patients for further tests (EMG, MRI, blood tests) to identify the cause and propose a targeted treatment.

Can you assess memory problems?

Yes, we carry out preliminary screening for cognitive disorders, including assessment of memory, attention, language and executive functions. This assessment enables us to distinguish normal aging from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or incipient dementia. If an in-depth neuropsychological assessment is indicated, we ensure referral to the appropriate resources. Regular follow-up is offered to monitor progress and adapt management.

When is brain imaging necessary?

An MRI or CT scan of the brain is indicated in cases of new, severe or sudden onset headaches, focal neurological symptoms (weakness, visual impairment, speech impairment), suspected structural lesions, unexplained epileptic seizures, rapid onset of cognitive impairment or head trauma. The indication is assessed during the consultation, and referral to the appropriate imaging is ensured by our team.

Is teleconsultation enough in neurology?

Yes, for many situations: migraine follow-up, review of imaging or EEG results, initial assessment of numbness or mild cognitive impairment, adjustment of neurological medication and first specialist opinion. A face-to-face consultation remains necessary for a full neurological examination (reflexes, sensitivity, coordination) or in the event of severe new symptoms. In the event of a suspected stroke, epileptic seizure or any sudden neurological deficit, consult the emergency room or call 911.

What is neuropathy and how is it treated?

Neuropathy is peripheral nerve damage that causes pain, burning, numbness, tingling or weakness, usually in the feet and hands. Common causes include diabetes (diabetic neuropathy), alcoholism, nutritional deficiencies (B12), certain medications and autoimmune diseases. Management aims to treat the underlying cause, relieve nerve pain (antiepileptics, antidepressants, topical analgesics) and prevent progression.

Do you assess dizziness and balance disorders?

Yes, vertigo can be of neurological origin (central involvement: cerebellum, brain stem) or peripheral (benign positional vertigo, vestibular neuritis, Meniere's disease). Our assessment distinguishes between these two categories, identifies the probable cause and suggests appropriate treatment: repositioning maneuvers, vestibular medication or referral to an ENT specialist or neurologist, depending on the indication. Balance disorders associated with weakness or numbness require priority neurological investigation.

Do you treat nerve compression syndromes?

Yes, nerve compression syndromes (carpal tunnel, ulnar nerve at the elbow, paresthetic meralgia, sciatica) are clinically assessed and, if necessary, referred for an electromyogram (EMG) to confirm the diagnosis. Management includes ergonomic recommendations, orthoses, anti-inflammatories, infiltrations or, in severe cases, referral for surgery. Early management prevents the progression of nerve damage.

What neurological warning signs should I be aware of?

Consult the emergency room or call 911 immediately if you experience: a sudden, very intense headache (thunderclap-like), sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, sudden slurred speech or comprehension, sudden double vision or loss of vision, sudden loss of balance associated with other symptoms, loss of consciousness or convulsions, or any sudden-onset neurological changes. These signs may suggest a stroke or neurological emergency requiring immediate attention.

Are neurology consultations covered by RAMQ?

Neurological medical consultations performed by a participating physician are generally covered by RAMQ when medically indicated. Some private clinic procedures may be billed separately. Consult our Fees section or contact the clinic to find out the terms and conditions applicable to your situation.
