How it works

Your orthesis journey, step by step

A simple, personalized and rigorously monitored process - from biomechanical assessment to delivery of your custom-made appliances.

1
Meeting the orthotist
The orthotist analyzes your medical history and lifestyle, then performs a precise biomechanical assessment, including gait analysis using a pressure transducer belt. If orthotics are indicated, the product best suited to your condition is selected with you.
2
Fitting orthotics
Your foot orthotics are designed directly in our workshop. Both pairs are delivered to you a few weeks after your initial appointment. Depending on your case, a drop-off service may be offered to facilitate the recovery of your devices.
3
Personalized follow-up
After a few weeks' wear, a second appointment can be scheduled to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment, make any necessary adjustments and ensure that your orthotics fully meet your comfort and mobility goals.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about orthotics and prosthetics

Foot orthoses, joint devices, partial prostheses, reimbursement and manufacturing processes - everything you need to know about our services at Clinique Omicron.

When should I see an orthotist?

Consult an orthotist if you suffer from foot pain (plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, Lenoir's spine), knee pain (osteoarthritis, ligament instability), ankle pain (recurrent sprains, Achilles tendon), hip pain or back pain of biomechanical origin. A consultation is also indicated if you notice gait abnormalities, irregular wear of your shoes, foot deformities, or if you wish to improve your sporting performance or prevent injury.

What's the difference between an orthosis and a prosthesis?

An orthosis is an external device applied to a part of the body to support, correct, stabilize or improve the function of an existing joint or limb (e.g. foot orthosis, knee brace, wrist orthosis). A prosthesis, on the other hand, replaces a missing or amputated anatomical structure in whole or in part (e.g. partial foot prosthesis). Both types of device are customized to your condition and functional goals.

Do you have custom-made foot orthotics?

Yes, our foot orthotics are entirely made-to-measure, designed in our workshop on the basis of a complete biomechanical assessment, including analysis of your gait using a pressure sensor belt. Unlike off-the-shelf insoles sold in pharmacies, they are made to your precise footprint, clinical condition and lifestyle. Two pairs of orthotics are delivered to you a few weeks after your initial evaluation.

How long do foot orthoses last?

The lifespan of custom-made foot orthotics generally varies between 2 and 5 years, depending on the type of orthotic, frequency of use, level of physical activity and maintenance. Soft orthotics for intensive sports use may require more frequent replacement, while rigid or semi-rigid orthotics are more durable. A re-evaluation is recommended if you notice visible wear, a return of pain, or a significant change in your physical condition or weight.

Do you treat plantar fasciitis with orthoses?

Yes, plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the plantar fascia, often confused with Lenoir's thorn) is one of the most common conditions treated with custom-made plantar orthoses. The orthosis aims to redistribute pressure under the foot, relieve tension on the fascia, correct biomechanical imbalances (hyperpronation, supination) and improve cushioning. Management may include recommendations on footwear, targeted stretching and, if necessary, collaboration with physiotherapy or sports medicine.

Do I need a prescription?

A medical prescription is not required to consult an orthotist at Clinique Omicron. However, some private insurers and public plans (e.g. RAMQ for certain clienteles, CNESST, SAAQ) require a medical prescription to cover the cost of orthotics or prosthetics. We recommend that you check your insurer's requirements before your consultation to maximize your reimbursement.

Are orthotics covered by insurance?

Coverage for orthotics and prosthetics varies according to your insurer. Most private group insurances provide partial or full coverage for custom-made foot orthotics, joint orthotics and certain prostheses, upon presentation of a medical prescription and detailed invoice. RAMQ may cover certain prostheses for specific clienteles. CNESST and SAAQ cover devices resulting from accidents at work or on the road. Check your coverage with your insurer before your consultation. See our Pricing section for more information.

Do you help with knee problems and osteoarthritis?

Yes, knee orthoses are an effective solution for relieving pain associated with osteoarthritis (gonarthrosis), ligament instability or meniscus injuries. Off-loading orthoses reduce pressure on the affected joint compartment, reducing pain and improving functional mobility. A foot orthosis may also be indicated to correct joint chain alignment and reduce stress on the knee. Collaboration with orthopaedics or physiotherapy is facilitated in our clinic.

Do you offer orthotics for sports?

Yes, our sports foot orthotics are designed for runners, field athletes (soccer, basketball, tennis) and those involved in sliding or endurance sports. They optimize shock absorption, improve force transfer, reduce the risk of recurrent injuries (periostitis, iliotibial band syndrome, metatarsalgia) and support performance. The assessment takes into account your sports shoe, stride type and training volume.

Can you help with carpal tunnel syndrome?

Yes, the wrist orthosis is a first-line treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome. It holds the wrist in a neutral position, reducing pressure on the median nerve and relieving symptoms (numbness, tingling, night-time pain). Wearing is generally recommended at night and during aggravating activities. We also assess the ergonomics of workstations, and coordinate with a physician or neurologist if further investigation (EMG) is indicated.

Are orthotics reimbursed by RAMQ?

The RAMQ covers prostheses and certain orthoses for specific clienteles, notably amputees and certain cases related to neuromuscular or congenital diseases. Standard foot orthoses are not generally covered by RAMQ for the general population, but may be covered under the technical aids program, depending on eligibility criteria. We recommend that you verify your eligibility with the RAMQ or contact us for more information.

How do I make an appointment with an orthotist?

You can book an appointment via our online portal, by telephone at 514 606-3350 or by e-mail at info@cliniqueomicron.ca. No medical referral is required for the initial consultation, although it may be necessary for reimbursement by some insurers. Bring your usual footwear (sports and daily wear) and, if available, your current orthotics for comparative evaluation at your first appointment.
