Frequently Asked Questions — Nipple Reconstruction
Restorative medical tattooing after mastectomy or breast surgery — everything you need to know about nipple reconstruction at Omicron Clinic.
Restorative areola tattooing is a medical micropigmentation technique that recreates the natural appearance of the areola and nipple after a mastectomy or breast surgery. Using medical-grade pigments and 3D shading techniques, the result offers a realistic and three-dimensional rendering that helps restore body image and self-confidence for breast cancer survivors.
Restorative tattooing is generally performed after the complete healing of breast reconstruction, which is approximately 3 to 6 months after surgery. It is important that the scars are well stabilized and that the tissues are sufficiently mature before undertaking dermopigmentation. This timeframe is assessed individually during the preliminary consultation.
The procedure is carried out in three steps: a preliminary consultation to jointly define the desired shape, color, and texture according to the patient's facial structure; the tattooing session in a semi-reclined position, using adapted pigments and needles for a natural look (duration: 120 to 150 minutes); followed by a touch-up session approximately 3 months later if needed, to adjust colors and contrasts after the pigments have stabilized.
The pain is minimal. A topical numbing cream is applied before the session to maximize comfort. Most patients experience mild discomfort during the procedure, but it is well-tolerated. Sensation in the treated area varies depending on each patient's surgical history—reconstructed areas may have reduced sensation, which contributes to making the procedure even more comfortable.
The result is visible immediately after the session. The final color gradually adjusts during the healing process and stabilizes approximately 30 days after the procedure — the shades lighten by 20 to 30 % during this process, hence the importance of the touch-up session. The tattoo is long-lasting, although occasional touch-ups may be considered over the years to maintain color intensity.
The procedure is performed by a professional specialized in medical dermopigmentation and trained in aesthetic areola reconstruction techniques. The pigments used are of medical quality, and all hygiene and sterility measures are strictly adhered to. The preliminary consultation also allows for the establishment of a trusting relationship and co-creation of results tailored to the morphology and expectations of each patient.
After the session, it is recommended to gently clean the area with a mild soap, apply the prescribed healing ointment, avoid direct sun exposure on the treated area, and wear loose, soft clothing against the skin. Baths, swimming pools, and activities causing excessive sweating should be avoided during the healing period, which lasts approximately 3 weeks. The final result is visible after one month.
The risks are rare when the procedure is performed within a rigorous medical setting. Possible complications include a slight skin reaction, a localized infection, a variation in the final color, or a reaction to the pigments in very exceptional cases. Report any unusual signs (increasing redness, swelling, fever) to the clinic team. Follow-up is scheduled to ensure proper healing.
No. Restorative tattooing does not interfere with nerves and does not alter skin sensitivity. Sensitivity in the treated area primarily depends on surgical history and prior procedures; it may be partially reduced in reconstructed areas, regardless of the tattooing. This characteristic is often a factor in patient comfort during the procedure.
Yes. In addition to recreating the appearance of areolas, restorative tattooing also helps to visually conceal post-surgical scars in the treated area. The use of dermopigmentation techniques and adapted shading helps to harmonize skin tone and make scars less apparent, for a more natural and discreet overall result.
The touch-up session, scheduled approximately 3 months after the initial session, allows for color and contrast adjustments once the pigments have fully settled into the skin. During healing, tones naturally lighten by 20 to 30 % — the touch-up corrects this change and refines the result to keep it as natural and harmonious as possible in the long term.
