Minor surgery refers to minimally invasive medical procedures performed under local anesthesia, without hospitalization. The consultation includes a medical assessment of the lesion or condition, confirmation of the surgical indication and explanations of the procedure. If treatment is indicated, it can be performed the same day in our sterile procedure room, under local anaesthetic. Typical operating time is 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the type of surgery. The patient goes home the same day with detailed post-operative instructions.
No. All procedures are performed under local anaesthetic: only a slight stinging sensation is felt when the anaesthetic is injected. The treated area then becomes completely numb for the duration of the procedure. Slight post-operative sensitivity may occur over the following 24 to 48 hours, but is generally well controlled with standard analgesics.
No. Anyone with a skin lesion, cyst, ingrown toenail, wart or other superficial condition can consult directly at Clinique Omicron without a prior medical referral. Appointments are generally available within 24 hours at our points of service in Quebec.
Fasting is not required for the vast majority of minor surgeries. On the other hand, it is important to inform your doctor of any medications you are taking, particularly anticoagulants and aspirin, which may require temporary adjustment. In some specific cases, special instructions will be given at the initial consultation.
Minor surgical procedures are performed by a physician trained and experienced in minor care, in a sterile, fully-equipped operating room. Post-operative follow-up care - dressings, stitch removal, wound monitoring - can be provided by a registered nurse on our team.
After the procedure, we recommend that you keep the wound clean and dry as instructed, avoid strenuous physical exertion for 48 to 72 hours, and watch for signs of infection (excessive redness, swelling, fever, discharge). Stitches are removed depending on the type of wound, usually between 5 and 14 days. In most cases, you can return to light activities the very next day.
Risks are generally low. Possible complications include local infection, minimal bleeding, reaction to the local anesthetic or unsatisfactory healing. These risks are minimized by the use of sterile instruments, rigorous aseptic techniques and compliance with post-operative instructions. Your doctor will explain all the risks specific to your procedure during your preliminary consultation.
Contact the clinic if you notice any signs of infection: excessive or increasing redness, unusual swelling, warmth at the wound site, pus discharge or abnormal odour. A fever over 38.5°C should also prompt prompt medical attention. Significant bleeding or intense pain not relieved by prescribed analgesics are also grounds for immediate contact.
Cosmetic or elective procedures performed in private clinics are generally not covered by RAMQ. For any skin biopsy, excision of a suspected mole or lesion to be characterized, the specimen taken is systematically sent for anatomopathological analysis. This step is essential to confirm the diagnosis, ensure that the lesion is benign and validate the completeness of the excision. Your doctor will send you the results within the laboratory's usual timeframe.
