Make an appointment

Finding a doctor without an appointment in Montreal or elsewhere in Quebec can feel like an uphill battle. Clinics that actually accept walk-in patients are becoming increasingly rare, and those that remain often fill up within the first few minutes of the day.

This guide explains your options when you need to see a doctor quickly, whether you have a family doctor or not.

Walk-in clinics: how they work in 2026

The concept of «walk-in clinics» has evolved significantly in Quebec. Today, the vast majority of these clinics actually operate on a same-day appointment system:

  • RVSQ (Rendez-vous santé Québec) The government platform allows you to book an appointment on the same day at participating clinics, usually from 7 or 8 AM.
  • Hello-health A service that facilitates appointment booking at partner clinics, with paid options for priority access.
  • Private clinics Some private clinics offer actual walk-in consultations with dedicated time slots.

When to go to urgent care vs. the emergency room

The walk-in clinic is appropriate for:

  • Common infections (sinusitis, ear infection, urinary tract infection)
  • New muscle or joint pain
  • Skin rashes or dermatological problems
  • Lingering cold or flu symptoms
  • Urgent prescription renewal
  • Minor injuries (slight sprains, superficial cuts)

Go to the emergency room In case of chest pain, severe difficulty breathing, heavy bleeding, loss of consciousness, severe allergic reaction, or any life-threatening symptom. In case of emergency, dial 911.

Options for patients without a family doctor

Nearly 1.5 million Quebecers do not have a family doctor. If you are in this situation, here are your options:

The First Line Access Desk (GAP)

Managed by your local CISSS or CIUSSS, GAP is the official mechanism to get a medical appointment when you don't have a family doctor. Call your regional establishment's number or go through 811.

811 (Health Info)

Info-Santé 811 service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A nurse assesses your symptoms by phone and directs you to the most appropriate resource.

Medical teleconsultation

Several clinics offer online medical consultations, accessible throughout Quebec. It's often the fastest option to see a doctor, with appointments available within 24 to 48 hours.

Private clinics

Private medical clinics generally accept patients without a family doctor, with or without a RAMQ card. Basic consultations covered by RAMQ remain free in most of these establishments.

How to maximize your chances of getting an appointment

  • Be ready early in the morning — Appointments on RVSQ generally become available between 7 AM and 8 AM. Log in in advance.
  • Expand your geographic area If nothing is available in your neighborhood, search within a wider radius.
  • Consider teleconsultation — For issues that don't require a physical examination, it's often the quickest solution.
  • Call clinics directly Some clinics are not on online platforms but accept patients by phone.
