It's 7pm on a Tuesday. Your child has a fever, you have a sore to worry about, or you're experiencing symptoms that are keeping you awake at night. Your family doctor - if you have one - is closed. Hospital emergencies mean hours of waiting. Super-clinics are overcrowded. Hundreds of thousands of Quebecers experience this scenario every week. And yet, there are ways to see a doctor in the evening, on Saturdays, or from home - without waiting in the emergency room, and without having to travel if you don't have to.

Why access to out-of-hours care is a real issue

The vast majority of medical clinics in Quebec operate Monday to Friday, between 8am and 5 or 6pm. This model corresponds to office hours - not patient hours. People get sick in the evening. Children run fevers on weekends. Pains don't respect opening hours. And workers, parents with atypical schedules, or those without a family doctor often can't consult during regular hours without taking a day off.

The direct consequence: emergency room visits for problems that could have been treated in the clinic, illnesses that worsen because they can't be treated quickly, and patients who forgo treatment because the process is too burdensome. It's a system problem - but today there are solutions to remedy it individually.

Options for consulting outside office hours in Quebec

Super-clinics and walk-in clinics

The public network has super-clinics in several regions of Quebec, some of which are open into the evening or on weekends. Access is free for RAMQ-insured patients, but waiting times can be long and continuity of care with the same professional is not guaranteed. These resources are useful for minor emergencies, but are no substitute for structured medical follow-up.

Info-Santé 811

The provincial Info-Santé line (811) is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It allows you to get advice from a nurse to assess the severity of a symptom and decide whether an urgent consultation is necessary. This service is free and covered by RAMQ. It does not prescribe medication or carry out a full clinical assessment, but it is a useful first resource for deciding whether a consultation is necessary.

Private medical teleconsultation - the game-changing solution

For patients who need a real consultation - clinical assessment, prescription, laboratory query, medical ticket, follow-up of results - private medical teleconsultation offers what the public network does not yet systematically provide: evening access, from home, with a qualified healthcare professional, within a reasonable timeframe. Clinique Omicron offers telemedicine consultations generally available from Monday to Friday until 8pm, with time slots varying according to the professionals available. Appointments can be made directly online at cliniqueomicron.ca.

Clinic service points - including Saturdays

Some Clinique Omicron locations are open on Saturdays, in addition to the regular weekday. This is the option for patients who prefer or require an in-person consultation - especially when a physical examination is required. Exact opening times vary by branch: see the Contact Us section of cliniqueomicron.ca or call 514-606-3350 for current availability.

Evening teleconsultation - what it really does

Medical teleconsultation is not an information line - it's a real consultation with a qualified healthcare professional. The doctor or nurse practitioner can assess your symptoms, make a diagnosis, write a prescription, issue a lab or imaging request, write a medical ticket or work stoppage, and provide clinical follow-up. Everything a doctor does in a clinic - except the physical examination - can be done remotely. And in many cases, the physical examination is unnecessary.

What can be treated by teleconsultation in the evening?

Respiratory infections - colds, flu, sinusitis, bronchitis - lend themselves particularly well to teleconsultation, as do urinary tract infections, uncomplicated skin rashes, eye infections, prescription refills, follow-up of lab results, initial assessment of musculoskeletal pain, medical tickets, or assessment of anxious or depressive symptoms. During the consultation, the professional assesses whether the problem can be managed remotely, or whether an in-person consultation is required - in which case he or she refers you to the right level of care.

What teleconsultation does not replace

Some situations require a physical presence: major injuries, severe chest or abdominal pain, acute neurological signs, or any situation where a physical examination is clinically indispensable. In these cases, the teleconsulting professional will refer you to a clinic or emergency room, depending on the severity of the situation. In the event of a medical emergency, dial 911.

The extended working hours supplement - what you need to know

Private clinics offering evening, weekend or holiday services may apply a surcharge for consultations outside regular business hours. This is the case at Clinique Omicron, which applies this surcharge for services rendered outside normal opening hours. The surcharge is clearly communicated when the appointment is booked - so there are no unpleasant billing surprises. Like all private medical services, this type of consultation is non-taxable and eligible as a medical expense on your income tax return. See cliniqueomicron.ca/rates/ for pricing details.

Which recourse to choose depending on your evening or weekend situation

Non-urgent symptoms - need a prescription or medical ticket

This is the ideal case for medical teleconsultation. Urinary tract infections, prescription renewals, the onset of a respiratory infection, results to be interpreted, work stoppage: Clinique Omicron lets you get an answer the same evening, without having to go to the emergency room. Book an appointment directly at cliniqueomicron.ca.

Physical examination required - non-emergency situation

If your situation requires a physical examination, but is not an emergency, schedule an appointment at one of Clinique Omicron's points of service. Several South Shore locations are open weekdays and Saturdays. Check availability and book an appointment online to avoid the wait.

Unsure of severity - new or worrying symptom

If you're not sure whether your situation requires an urgent consultation, start by calling 811 (Info-Santé). The nurse will assess with you whether a consultation is necessary and direct you to the right level of care. You can also start a teleconsultation with Clinique Omicron - the professional will let you know whether an in-person consultation or a trip to the emergency room is necessary.

Medical emergencies

Chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, loss of consciousness, stroke, serious injury: call 911 or go immediately to the nearest emergency room. Telemedicine and private clinics do not replace emergency care.

Clinique Omicron - accessible care when you need it

Clinique Omicron is a network of medical clinics present at several points of service on Quebec's South Shore, with a telemedicine offering that covers the entire province. The multidisciplinary team includes family physicians, specialized nurse practitioners, nurse clinicians, nutritionists, kinesiologists and social workers - available in clinics and, for the most part, by teleconsultation.

For patients who consult us regularly, or who want structured care throughout the year, our subscription packages offer easier access and lower costs per consultation. For occasional patients, à la carte consultations are available without obligation. New branches are also planned for Montreal and Laval in 2026, further extending the network's geographical coverage.
