Frequently asked questions about ENT
Sinusitis, ear infections, tinnitus, hearing loss, snoring, sore throats and pediatric consultations - everything you need to know about our ENT services at Clinique Omicron.
Consult an ENT specialist for ear pain, recurrent ear infections, persistent ringing (tinnitus), hearing loss, chronic sinusitis, persistent nasal congestion, recurrent sore throat, hoarseness, swallowing problems, severe snoring or dizziness. In children, a consultation is recommended at the first episode of severe otitis, or in the event of recurrent ENT infections. No medical referral is required.
Yes, chronic sinusitis (symptoms lasting more than 12 weeks) requires a thorough evaluation to distinguish between infectious, inflammatory or allergic causes. Our management includes recommendations for nasal hygiene (saline rinse, humidifier), appropriate drug treatment (nasal corticoids, antibiotics if indicated), advice on reducing environmental triggers and, if necessary, referral to allergology or ENT surgery to assess the presence of nasal polyps.
Yes, tinnitus (ringing, buzzing or whistling in the ears) is assessed to identify possible causes: earwax build-up, otitis, hearing loss, noise exposure, hypertension or medication factors. A thorough examination enables referral to the appropriate resources (audiology, neurology) if necessary. Tinnitus management strategies (sound therapy, relaxation, auditory hygiene) can be discussed during the consultation.
Yes, voice disorders (dysphonia, persistent hoarseness, voice fatigue, voice extinction) can have several origins: acute or chronic laryngitis, laryngeal reflux disease (LPR), vocal nodules or polyps, cordial paralysis or vocal overwork. An assessment can identify the cause and suggest appropriate treatment, including advice on vocal hygiene, anti-reflux treatment, or referral to speech therapy or an ENT specialist for laryngoscopy.
Yes, snoring is often linked to upper airway obstruction (deviated septum, adenoids, enlarged tonsils, muscle relaxation). We assess the cause and offer advice (positioning, nasal hygiene, weight loss) and, if obstructive sleep apnea is suspected, we ensure referral to a pulmonology or sleep medicine department for polysomnographic recording.
Yes, for many situations: assessment of sinusitis, evolving otitis, nasal congestion or respiratory allergy, follow-up of sore throat or persistent cough, referral and recommendations for snoring, and review of audiogram or imaging results. An in-person consultation is still required for otoscopic examination, auricular lavage, throat swabbing or the presence of a foreign body. In the event of severe symptoms or sudden onset, consult the emergency department.
Yes, our team takes care of the most common pediatric ENT problems: recurrent ear infections, ear pain, foreign bodies in the nose or ear, tonsil and adenoid disorders, and sleep-disordered breathing. We also perform hearing assessments and interpret pediatric audiograms. Each consultation is conducted with a gentle, reassuring approach, adapted to the child's age.
Treatment of otitis depends on its type: otitis externa (infection of the ear canal) is treated with antibiotic ear drops. Acute otitis media (middle ear infection) can be treated with oral antibiotics, depending on age and severity, or with active surveillance for mild forms. Recurrent otitis in children may require evaluation for transtympanic tubing (diabolos). Follow-up is recommended to verify complete healing and prevent complications.
Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPR) is a form of gastric reflux in which acids travel up the larynx and pharynx, causing hoarseness, chronic coughing, a feeling of a lump in the throat (globus), throat irritation or persistent sore throat - often without the typical heartburn. Treatment combines hygienic-dietary measures (avoid late meals, acidic and fatty foods, raise the head of the bed), drug therapy (proton pump inhibitors) and, if necessary, referral to gastroenterology.
An initial hearing loss assessment is carried out in the clinic to identify reversible causes: earwax accumulation (treatable by earwashing), serous otitis or otosclerosis. In the case of sensorineural hearing loss (damage to the auditory nerve), we refer the patient to an audiologist for a full audiometric assessment and hearing aid evaluation. In children, early detection is essential to prevent language delays and learning difficulties.
ENT consultations performed by a participating physician are generally covered by RAMQ when medically indicated. Certain procedures performed in private clinics may be billed separately. Consult our Fees section or contact the clinic to find out the conditions applicable to your situation.
