Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions — Pediatric Follow-up

Vaccinations, development, minor emergencies, ADHD, ASD, follow-ups without a family doctor, teleconsultations — clear answers on our comprehensive pediatric care at Clinique Omicron, from birth to adolescence, in-clinic or online in Quebec.

From what age does pediatric follow-up begin and until when does it continue?

Pediatric follow-up begins at birth—the first appointment is recommended within 7 to 14 days after delivery—and continues until age 17. During this initial visit, our professionals assess the baby's growth, feeding, and neonatal reflexes. The frequency of consultations is then adapted to age: at 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 18 months, then annually until age 5, and annually thereafter until adolescence.

Can my child be seen at the clinic if they don't have a family doctor?

Yes. Clinique Omicron accepts children without a family doctor and offers pediatric follow-up care without a prior referral. We provide one-time or ongoing medical support for infants and young children awaiting a doctor assigned through the Guichet d'accès à un médecin de famille (GAMF - Family Doctor Access Point). No family doctor is required to start – you can book an appointment directly, whether for regular growth follow-up, vaccination, or a consultation for an acute health issue.

What is evaluated during a pediatric follow-up visit?

Each visit includes a comprehensive, age-appropriate assessment of the child: weight, height, and head circumference measurements according to growth charts, monitoring of motor, cognitive, and social developmental milestones, review of eating, sleeping, and hygiene habits, updating the vaccination schedule, and personalized advice on safety, prevention, and parenting. For older children, the assessment also includes behavior, school adjustment, and emotional health.

Is pediatric vaccination offered at the clinic and is it free?

Yes. Clinique Omicron administers all vaccines included in the Quebec Immunization Program (PQI) according to the recommended vaccination schedule in Quebec. Vaccination is free for children aged 0 to 6 years in accordance with this program. Personalized support is offered at each stage to explain the vaccines administered, the normal reactions expected, and the signs to watch for after vaccination. The vaccination record is updated at each visit.

Do you screen for ADHD, ASD, and developmental disorders?

Yes. The Omicron Clinic performs early screening for neurodevelopmental disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), speech delays, and motor skill disorders. A structured clinical evaluation helps identify early signs and refer to appropriate specialists — a specialized pediatrician, neuropsychologist, speech therapist, or occupational therapist — if necessary. Early screening significantly improves long-term developmental outcomes.

Do you offer walk-in consultations for minor pediatric emergencies?

Yes. Clinique Omicron offers rapid consultations for minor pediatric emergencies, eliminating the need for a hospital emergency room visit. Our professionals can assess and treat: fevers, respiratory tract infections, ear infections, sore throats, gastroenteritis, rashes, conjunctivitis, mild allergic reactions, and address urgent parental concerns. The service is also available via teleconsultation for a quick assessment from home, particularly useful at night or on weekends to avoid unnecessary trips to the emergency room.

What are the signs that should alert a parent and warrant a prompt consultation?

Seek prompt medical attention for any child presenting with: persistent high fever (especially in infants under 3 months old), unusual inconsolable crying, refusal to feed or sudden weight loss, difficulty breathing or rapid breathing, extensive rash or rash accompanied by fever, unusual lethargy or reduced responsiveness, seizures, repeated vomiting with signs of dehydration, or any developmental delay noted (not holding head up, not smiling, not babbling) according to age-expected milestones.

How do you support nutritional monitoring and children's diets?

Nutritional follow-up is an integral part of every pediatric consultation. Our nurses and nutritionists support families through all feeding stages: breastfeeding support and transition to formula, introduction of solid foods (weaning), management of food allergies, prevention of deficiencies (iron, vitamin D), advice for picky eaters, and monitoring of weight and growth charts. Referrals to a pediatric nutritionist can be made if specialized follow-up is required.

Can I have a telemedicine appointment for my child's pediatric follow-up?

Yes. Pediatric telemedicine is available throughout Quebec via our secure platform. It is particularly suitable for questions about development, sleep, feeding, behavior, monitoring chronic illnesses like asthma or eczema, and non-urgent concerns between clinic visits. It is also very useful for quickly assessing a situation and determining if a physical consultation is necessary, or for obtaining professional advice in the evening or on weekends.

How is follow-up care for a premature infant or one with a particular medical condition carried out?

Children born prematurely or with specific medical conditions (congenital malformations, chronic illnesses, genetic conditions) receive close and personalized monitoring at Clinique Omicron. Our multidisciplinary approach coordinates care among nurses, doctors, nutritionists, and external specialists (specialized pediatricians, cardiologists, pulmonologists, neurologists, as needed). For premature infants, corrected age is used to assess developmental milestones, and the frequency of consultations is adjusted according to the child's clinical progress.

What should I bring to the first pediatric appointment?

For the first consultation, please bring the child's health record (or the birth summary provided by the maternity hospital), the child's health insurance card, the vaccination record if they already have one, a list of current medications or supplements administered (vitamin D, formula), as well as all your questions and observations regarding your child's development, feeding, or behavior. It is helpful to note sleep habits and feeding routines to allow for a comprehensive evaluation from the very first visit.

Is pediatric follow-up covered by the RAMQ or private insurance?

Pediatric vaccinations for children aged 0 to 6 are free under the Quebec Immunization Program. Pediatric medical consultations performed by a participating physician may be covered by the RAMQ depending on the circumstances. Specialized nursing consultations and certain preventive services fall under the private sector, but may be reimbursed in whole or in part by group or private insurance plans. We recommend that you check your coverage with your insurer. Consult our Pricing section or contact us to learn more about the type of follow-up desired.
