Treatment of Varicose veins

Phlebology

At Clinique Omicron, our doctors determine whether you have venous disease through a diagnostic ultrasound and a rigorous evaluation process. The phlebology department treats varicose veins, spider veins and chronic venous disorders. Depending on the results, targeted treatments such as sclerotherapy or endovenous laser are proposed. Each protocol is tailored to the location and severity of vein damage, from superficial varicosities to incompetent saphenous veins.

Our process

Our entire process, from start to finish, is carried out by a doctor specializing in the treatment of varicose veins.

Stage 01

Medical assessment

Complete questionnaire and targeted physical examination by our specialized physician to assess your venous condition.

Stage 02

Duplex ultrasound

Performed on site by the physician for a targeted and precise assessment of the superficial venous network.

Stage 03

Treatment

Surface and/or ultrasound-guided injections when indicated, performed directly during the consultation.

Phlebology services

What is phlebology?

Phlebology is a branch of medicine devoted to the study of conditions affecting the veins, in particular venous insufficiency and varicose problems localized in the lower limbs. A phlebologist is a qualified physician who assesses, performs physical and ultrasound examinations, makes diagnoses and administers treatments for venous problems.

Venous insufficiency occurs when the veins develop health problems and can no longer effectively perform their role of circulating blood from the extremities to the heart. This condition is widespread, and our knowledge of it has increased significantly in recent years. The disease is known to be chronic and progressive, hence the importance of early detection and prompt intervention to prevent serious long-term complications.

Recognizing the signs

Symptoms & treated conditions

Venous diseases often develop in silence. Recognizing the first signs allows you to intervene quickly and avoid serious long-term complications.

Leg heaviness & pain

Feeling of heaviness, pain or cramps at the end of the day, particularly after standing or sitting for long periods.

Swollen ankles

Edema visible at the end of the day, a sign of insufficient venous return. Worsens with heat and prolonged standing.

Visible varicose veins

Dilated, tortuous veins protruding under the skin, often blue or greenish, located on calves and thighs.

Varicosities & telangiectasias

Small red, blue or violet vessels visible on the surface of the skin, often cosmetic but often indicative of venous insufficiency.

Itching & burning

Sensations of tingling, burning or itching around the affected veins, a sign of local inflammation.

Venous ulcers & complications

Advanced stage of untreated venous insufficiency. Chronic wounds around the ankle requiring urgent treatment.

If you have one or more of these symptoms, a consultation with our phlebologist is recommended. The earlier you are treated, the better the results.

Treatment options

Available treatments

Each protocol is adapted to the location and severity of venous damage, from superficial varicosities to incompetent saphenous veins.

Sclerotherapy

Injection of a sclerosing agent directly into the vein to make it gradually disappear. Treatment of choice for spider veins and small, superficial varicose veins.

Varicose veins Small varicose veins Without surgery Results in 4-6 weeks.

Echo-guided sclerotherapy

Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy to treat deeper veins not visible to the naked eye, with optimum precision and long-lasting results.

Deep varicose veins Ultrasound guidance Maximum precision

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions - Phlebology and varicose veins

Varicose veins, spider veins, sclerotherapy, venous insufficiency - everything you need to know about our phlebology services at Clinique Omicron.

What is phlebology and what does this service involve?

Phlebology is the medical specialty dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of venous diseases, including varicose veins, spider veins and chronic venous insufficiency. At Clinique Omicron, the service includes a complete clinical evaluation, a venous Doppler ultrasound performed on-site by the physician, and then targeted treatment depending on the condition - all during the same appointment.

What's the difference between varicose veins and spider veins?

Varicosities - also known as spider veins or telangiectasias - are very small, dilated superficial vessels, visible as red, blue or violet on the surface of the skin. Varicose veins, on the other hand, are larger, permanently dilated veins, often protruding and palpable, located mainly on the calves and thighs. Both conditions can be treated at the clinic.

What symptoms should I consult?

Consult us if you experience leg heaviness or pain at the end of the day, swollen ankles, night-time cramps, itching or burning around the veins, or if you notice visible dilated veins. Changes in the color of the skin around the ankles and sores that do not heal well are signs of advanced venous insufficiency requiring prompt attention.

What treatments are offered at Clinique Omicron?

We offer surface sclerotherapy (direct injection into spider veins and small superficial varicose veins) and ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy (for deeper veins, performed under ultrasound guidance). These treatments are non-surgical, minimally invasive and performed on an outpatient basis. The treatment plan is determined during the initial medical assessment.

How does a phlebology consultation work?

The consultation consists of three steps carried out during the same appointment: a medical assessment with questionnaire and targeted physical examination, a Duplex venous ultrasound performed on-site by the physician to map the venous network, and then treatment if indicated - surface or ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy depending on the results. Allow 60 to 90 minutes for the first visit.

Do I need a medical referral to consult?

No. You can make an appointment directly with Clinique Omicron without a referral from another doctor. Appointments are readily available at our locations throughout Quebec. It's a good idea to bring your health insurance card, list of medications and any previous test results, if available.

Is sclerotherapy painful?

Sclerotherapy is generally well tolerated. Some patients experience a slight tingling or burning sensation with each injection, which disappears within a few seconds. Treatment does not require general anesthesia. Most patients resume their normal activities immediately after the session.

What are the possible side effects after treatment?

Side effects are generally mild and temporary: redness, local induration, bruising or slight brownish pigmentation at the injection site. These reactions usually disappear within a few weeks. Rarer effects may include local inflammation or transient hyperpigmentation. Your doctor will give you detailed post-treatment instructions to optimize your recovery.

What are the instructions after a sclerotherapy session?

After treatment, we recommend walking for 20 to 30 minutes immediately after the session, wearing the prescribed compression stockings, avoiding direct sunlight and hot baths for two weeks, and refraining from strenuous sports for 48 to 72 hours. A return to normal daily activities is possible on the same day as the consultation.

How many sessions are needed and when can I see results?

The number of sessions depends on the extent and severity of the varicose veins or spider veins. In general, 1 to 3 sessions spaced a few weeks apart are sufficient. The first visible results appear within 4 to 6 weeks of treatment, as the treated veins gradually fade. A post-treatment follow-up is scheduled to assess results and plan any further sessions.

Are there any contraindications to sclerotherapy?

Certain situations contraindicate sclerotherapy: pregnancy, recent phlebitis, a known allergy to sclerosing agents, or severe circulatory disorders. The initial medical evaluation will identify any contraindications and, if necessary, suggest an alternative treatment suited to your situation.

Are varicose vein treatments covered by RAMQ?

Phlebology treatments in private clinics are generally not covered by the RAMQ. Private insurance receipts are provided - check with your insurer to determine your coverage. If you have any questions about pricing, please consult our Pricing section or contact us directly.
