FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Sexology

Sexual dysfunctions, vaginismus, desire, couple's therapy, telereatrology, reimbursements — everything you need to know about our sexology services at Clinique Omicron.

What is clinical sexology and who is it for?

Clinical sexology is a health discipline that studies and treats difficulties related to human sexuality—desire, arousal, orgasm, pain, sexual behaviors, identity, and intimate relationships. It is for anyone, regardless of age, sexual orientation, or gender identity, who is experiencing sexual or relational difficulties. Sessions are strictly professional, verbal, and confidential—there is no physical contact. Sexologists are members of the Ordre des sexologues du Québec (OSQ) and are bound by a strict code of ethics.

What is vaginismus and how is it treated?

Vaginism is an involuntary contraction of the pelvic floor muscles that makes penetration painful or impossible. It can be primary (never had penetration) or secondary (occurred after a period without difficulty). Treatment in sexology includes psychoeducation, working on beliefs and fears related to penetration, gradual exposure therapy, and muscle relaxation exercises. Collaboration with a doctor, gynecologist, or pelvic floor physiotherapist is often recommended for comprehensive management.

Can sexology help with erectile dysfunction?

Yes. Erectile dysfunction often has a significant psychological component, even when a medical cause is present. Performance anxiety, stress, fear of failure, or beliefs related to masculinity can maintain or amplify the problem. The sexologist addresses these psychological factors, cognitive patterns, communication with the partner, and rebuilding confidence. Collaboration with a physician for medical evaluation (cardiovascular, hormonal) and pharmacological treatment (if indicated) is often complementary.

How does sexology help couples?

Couple's sexology aims to improve intimate and sexual communication, resolve conflicts related to differences in desire or practices, and rebuild a satisfying emotional and physical connection. It is particularly useful after a period of distance, infidelity, childbirth, illness, or simply a routine that has eroded intimacy. Both partners generally participate in sessions, but individual meetings may also be offered to deepen personal work. The approach is non-judgmental and respects each person's values.

Does sexology deal with desire disorders?

Yes. Desire disorders (hypoactive sexual desire, loss of desire, discordant desire between partners) are among the most frequent reasons for consultation in sexology. They can be related to hormonal, psychological, relational, or contextual factors. The sexologist explores the contributing factors, works on representations and expectations, offers exercises for intimate reconnection, and adapts strategies to the reality of the couple or the individual. A medical evaluation (hormonal, thyroid, medication review) may be recommended in parallel.

How does a first sexology consultation go?

The first meeting (60 to 75 minutes) is an assessment consultation. The sexologist invites the person (or couple) to describe their situation, concerns, and expectations. The interview is guided, supportive, and non-judgmental. The sexologist asks questions about sexual history, relationships, values, and factors influencing the current situation. At the end of the session, they propose an understanding of the situation and a therapeutic direction. It is never mandatory to disclose everything during the first meeting – the process evolves at your own pace.

Can one consult a sexologist for questions about their identity or orientation?

Yes, absolutely. Sexology welcomes questions about gender identity, sexual orientation, attraction, paraphilias, or any other dimension of sexuality. The approach is affirmative, inclusive, and non-judgmental – the sexologist does not steer towards a particular identity but supports the individual in their process of exploration and understanding. LGBTQ+, non-binary, or questioning individuals are welcomed with respect and cultural sensitivity. Confidentiality is absolute.

Does sexology help after sexual trauma?

Yes. A traumatic experience (sexual assault, abuse, painful experiences) can profoundly affect one's relationship with sexuality, their body, and intimacy. The sexologist intervenes to help the person rebuild a healthy and positive relationship with their sexuality, at their own pace and without pressure. This approach is complementary to psychotherapeutic work on trauma (EMDR, CBT) and can be done in coordination with a psychologist or doctor. Respecting the person's pace and comfort is always a priority.

How many sessions are required?

The number of sessions varies depending on the nature of the request and the goals. Some people see significant changes in 5 to 8 sessions for a targeted issue. Others prefer longer-term support to explore their sexual or relational life in depth. For couples, support is generally 8 to 15 sessions, with the possibility of follow-up sessions depending on progress. There is no set duration – the process is adapted to your pace, your needs, and your progress. You always have control over the frequency and duration of the support.

Are sexology services covered by insurance?

Sexology services are not covered by the RAMQ. Some private group insurance plans reimburse consultations with a sexologist who is a member of the Ordre des sexologues du Québec (OSQ) under the category of mental health services or paramedical therapists. Coverage varies depending on your plan — check with your insurer to see if sexologists are included and what the reimbursement amount is. The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) may also cover some sessions. Consult our Pricing section for more information.

Do I need a medical referral to consult?

No. No medical referral is required to consult a sexologist at Clinique Omicron. You can make an appointment directly, on your own initiative, either in person at the clinic or via tele-sexology. Some insurers may require a doctor's prescription for reimbursement – check your coverage. If your doctor or specialist (gynecologist, urologist) has referred you to sexology, bring their note to facilitate interprofessional collaboration if you agree.

How to make an appointment with a sexologist?

You can make an appointment through our online portal, by phone at 514 606-3350, or by email at info@cliniqueomicron.ca. No prior prescription or diagnosis is required. You don't need to explain everything when booking your appointment — a brief description of your situation is sufficient. Consultations are offered in-clinic and via telesexology (secure videoconference). Confidentiality is absolute, and no information will be shared without your explicit consent.
