Frequently Asked Questions in Urology
Urinary problems, enlarged prostate, erectile dysfunction, recurrent infections, prostate cancer screening – answers to the most common questions about our urology services.
It is recommended to consult a urologist for persistent or unexplained urinary symptoms: difficulty urinating, weak stream, frequent or urgent urges, burning during urination, pelvic pain, or blood in the urine (hematuria). Urological follow-up is also indicated for men over 50 for prostate screening (PSA), in cases of erectile dysfunction, testicular pain, male infertility, or recurrent urinary tract infections. At Clinique Omicron, there are no long waiting lists – you will be evaluated quickly by a urologist.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that frequently occurs in men over 50. It compresses the urethra, causing urinary symptoms: a weak stream, incomplete bladder emptying, frequent nighttime urination (nocturia), urinary urgency, or difficulty starting urination. BPH is diagnosed through a physical exam, blood tests (PSA), and ultrasound. Treatment may include medication (alpha-blockers, 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors) or surgery, depending on the severity.
Prostate cancer screening primarily relies on blood tests for PSA (prostate-specific antigen) and a digital rectal exam. Screening is recommended starting at age 50 for men at average risk, and as early as age 40-45 for men at high risk (family history, African descent). An elevated PSA does not automatically mean cancer; it can also indicate an enlarged prostate (BPH) or prostatitis. If results are abnormal, further tests (prostate MRI, biopsy) may be necessary. Our urologists will guide you through each step of the evaluation.
Yes. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common medical condition that requires multifactorial management. Our urologists evaluate vascular (atherosclerosis, diabetes, hypertension), hormonal (low testosterone), neurological (neuropathy), medication-related, or psychological causes. Treatment may include oral medications (sildenafil, tadalafil), hormone replacement therapy, intracavernosal injections, or an interdisciplinary approach with sexology. Early consultation allows for the identification of underlying health problems—ED is sometimes an early sign of cardiovascular disease.
Yes. Recurrent urinary tract infections (3 episodes or more per year) require thorough urological investigation. Our urologists look for predisposing factors: anatomical abnormalities, kidney stones, incomplete bladder emptying, hormonal disorders in menopausal women, or antibiotic resistance. A urine culture with an antibiogram, a renal ultrasound, and a functional bladder evaluation may be required. A prevention plan (antibiotic prophylaxis, lifestyle changes, local hormone therapy) is developed based on the results.
During the first consultation, the urologist will gather your medical, surgical, and medication history, and then perform a focused clinical examination. Depending on your situation, further tests may be required, such as a urine analysis, PSA test, renal and bladder ultrasound, uroflowmetry, or imaging. At the end of the consultation, a clear summary will be presented to you with the available diagnostic and therapeutic options. It is helpful to bring your recent test results and to note the frequency, duration, and characteristics of your symptoms before the consultation.
Absolutely. Urology treats disorders of the urinary tract in both men and women. Women frequently consult urologists for recurrent urinary tract infections, stress urinary incontinence (leaking with exertion, coughing, or sneezing), an overactive bladder (frequent and urgent urges), bladder prolapse, chronic pelvic pain, or interstitial cystitis (interstitial cystitis syndrome). A urogynecological approach is sometimes necessary in collaboration with our gynecologists.
Any sudden and severe testicular pain requires emergency evaluation: it can indicate testicular torsion, a surgical emergency requiring prompt intervention to avoid loss of the testicle. Progressive testicular pain or the discovery of a mass, swelling, or discomfort should also be evaluated promptly—they can indicate epididymitis, varicocele, hydrocele, or, more rarely, testicular cancer. A scrotal ultrasound is usually performed. Seek prompt medical attention or go to the emergency room in case of sudden acute pain.
Yes. The male factor is involved in approximately 40 to 50 % of couple infertility cases. Urological evaluation includes a sperm analysis (semen analysis), hormonal assessment (FSH, LH, testosterone, prolactin), scrotal ultrasound, and a clinical examination for varicoceles or anatomical abnormalities. Depending on the results, medical treatment, surgical treatment (varicocele correction, vasectomy), or referral to a fertility clinic may be recommended. A joint consultation with your partner can be arranged if needed.
Urology consultations at Clinique Omicron are conducted privately and are not covered by the RAMQ for services billed privately. Some group insurance plans may partially reimburse private specialized consultations according to your contract. Please consult our Pricing section for billing details, or contact us with any questions.
No. As part of our private clinic, a referral from your family doctor is not required to consult a urologist. You can make an appointment directly. However, if you already have recent tests (PSA, urine analysis, imaging) or results from your doctor, bring them to your consultation – this will allow the urologist to have a more complete view of your situation and avoid redundant examinations.
You can book an appointment through our online booking portal, by phone at 514 606-3350, or by email at info@cliniqueomicron.ca. No medical referral is required. Consultations are offered in-clinic and via telemedicine, depending on the nature of your issue. Briefly state your symptoms or the reason for your visit when booking your appointment to help us organize your visit. In case of urgent urological symptoms (complete urinary retention, acute testicular pain, heavy blood in urine), go to the emergency room without delay.
