Frequently asked questions about cardiology
Everything you need to know about cardiovascular assessment, examinations, treatment and follow-up at Clinique Omicron.
Chest pain, unexplained shortness of breath, frequent palpitations, dizziness, syncope (loss of consciousness) or swelling of the legs. These symptoms may indicate arrhythmia, heart failure or coronary risk. In the event of acute chest pain radiating to the arm or jaw, call 911 immediately.
We perform and refer for ECG (electrocardiogram), Holter (24 to 48-hour recording), MAPA (ambulatory blood pressure measurement) and stress test. If required, we can also refer patients for echocardiography or coronary CT scans through our network of specialized partners.
For ECG, no special preparation is required - just wear clothes that are easy to remove. For the Holter, avoid creams or lotions on the chest on the day of the test, and wear comfortable clothing. Bring a list of your current medications. The Holter is worn for 24 to 48 hours during your usual activities.
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a heart rhythm disorder in which the atria beat irregularly and rapidly. It can cause palpitations, fatigue and shortness of breath, and increases the risk of stroke. Treatment includes medication to control rhythm or heart rate, anticoagulants to reduce the risk of stroke, and sometimes cardioversion or ablation depending on the indication.
Hypertension management is based on a combination of hygienic and dietary measures (salt reduction, regular physical activity, weight control, limiting alcohol intake) and, if necessary, drug therapy. Regular monitoring of blood pressure at home is recommended. Our doctors adjust the treatment according to the evolution of your blood pressure and your overall cardiovascular risk profile.
Yes, for many stable situations. Teleconsultation is ideal for monitoring hypertension, reviewing test results, adjusting medication or managing risk factors. Acute situations or those requiring a physical examination (auscultation, ECG) should be assessed in the clinic.
The main risk factors are: high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, family history of cardiovascular disease and age (men 45 and over, women 55 and over). Our team assesses your overall risk profile and proposes a personalized prevention plan.
Heart failure occurs when the heart no longer pumps blood efficiently. Characteristic signs include shortness of breath on exertion or at rest, persistent fatigue, swelling of the ankles and legs, and rapid weight gain (water retention). Early treatment can slow progression and significantly improve quality of life.
Secondary prevention is based on adherence to medication (statins, aspirin, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors), lifestyle modifications (smoking cessation, Mediterranean diet, appropriate exercise), and regular cardiological follow-up. A cardiac rehabilitation program may also be recommended, depending on your situation.
Medical consultations may be covered by the RAMQ, depending on your status. Certain examinations or specialized follow-up care are offered in a private setting. Consult our Fees section or contact the clinic to find out the terms and conditions applicable to your situation.
Dyslipidemia refers to an imbalance in blood lipids: high LDL cholesterol, high triglycerides or low HDL cholesterol. These abnormalities promote the formation of atherosclerotic plaques in the arteries, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. A complete lipid profile and appropriate treatment (statins, diet, exercise) can effectively control this risk.
