Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions — Perinatal Support

Preconception, pregnancy monitoring, prenatal classes, postpartum, postpartum depression, breastfeeding, teleconsultation — clear answers on our comprehensive perinatal support at Clinique Omicron, accessible without a medical referral, in-clinic, at home, or online in Quebec.

From when can we benefit from your perinatal support?

Our support begins even before conception – before pregnancy. If you are planning a pregnancy, we offer a preconception health assessment including nutritional advice, medication adjustments, and folic acid recommendations. Once pregnancy is confirmed, ideally before 10 weeks, nursing care begins and covers five stages: preconception, 1st trimester, 2nd and 3rd trimesters, postpartum, and the 4th trimester (up to 12 months after birth).

Do I need a medical referral or to be an existing patient at the clinic?

No. Omicron Clinic's perinatal support is accessible without a medical referral and without being a regular patient of the clinic. It is open to all pregnant individuals or those planning a pregnancy, regardless of whether they already have a family doctor or are currently receiving obstetrical care. Our support is complementary and can be integrated with your existing care — you do not have to choose between the two.

What prenatal exams and screenings are performed at the clinic?

Clinique Omicron offers comprehensive biological monitoring throughout your pregnancy, including blood glucose levels, complete blood count (CBC), blood type, infection screenings (HIV, hepatitis B, rubella, Group B Streptococcus), prenatal screening for trisomies 21, 18, and 13, as well as routine quarterly tests. Blood draws can be performed at the clinic or at home, according to your preference. For ultrasounds—fertility monitoring, pelvic evaluations, follicular monitoring—our gynecological ultrasound services are also available on-site.

What do the prenatal classes offered at Omicron Clinic cover?

Our prenatal classes cover a wide range of topics to prepare you for your baby's arrival: pain management (natural and pharmacological approaches like epidurals), creating a birth plan, preparing for vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), newborn care, breastfeeding, and preparing for a planned cesarean. Classes are available in-clinic and online, so individuals located anywhere in Quebec can benefit. Your partner or a loved one is welcome to attend.

What breastfeeding support services do you offer?

Our perinatal nurses offer comprehensive breastfeeding support, either in our clinic or in your home. This includes assistance with latching in the first few days after childbirth, lactation assessment, management of common challenges (pain, engorgement, breast pump use, insufficient infant weight gain), as well as guidance for gentle weaning and transitioning to mixed feeding or solids. In-home postpartum follow-up is available for new mothers seeking support in their own environment.

What are the warning signs that require an urgent consultation during pregnancy?

Please consult us quickly if you have any of these symptoms: severe or persistent abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, severe headaches accompanied by vision problems or swelling of the face and hands (possible signs of preeclampsia), decreased or absent fetal movement, contractions before 37 weeks, fever, severe urinary burning, or loss of amniotic fluid. Our nurses are available to quickly assess your symptoms in the clinic or via telemedicine.

How does Clinique Omicron support perinatal mental health?

Perinatal mental health is a central component of our support. Our specialized nurses are trained to recognize the signs of emotional distress, anxiety, antenatal and postpartum depression, as well as the mental overload related to parenthood. If needed, they coordinate a referral to our mental health partners (psychologists, social workers) while respecting confidentiality. If you are experiencing symptoms of postpartum depression—persistent sadness, feelings of disconnection, intense exhaustion—don't wait to seek help: these conditions are common and treatable.

Do you offer perinatal consultations via telemedicine?

Yes. Our perinatal teleconsultation service is available throughout Quebec via a secure and confidential platform. You can consult our specialized nurses from home, without traveling, for your pregnancy follow-ups, questions about the postpartum period, breastfeeding consultations, perinatal anxiety management, or baby follow-ups (sleep, colic, development, introduction of solids). In-home consultations are also available for those who prefer to be supported in their living environment.

What is the role of the perinatal nurse in relation to the obstetrician?

The perinatal nurse plays a complementary role to that of the obstetrician or primary care physician. She provides continuous and personalized support between medical appointments, answers your daily questions, assesses your symptoms, offers education on pregnancy stages, detects signs of complications, and coordinates referrals as needed. Our network includes obstetricians, nutritionists, osteopaths, social workers, and psychologists—we mobilize the right experts at the right time, complementing your usual medical care.

What is the duration of the postnatal follow-up offered by the clinic?

Our postnatal follow-up extends up to 12 months after childbirth — what we call the extended 4th trimester. It covers the mother's physical recovery (postpartum visit, healing, return of menstruation), postnatal mental health, breastfeeding support, postpartum contraception, gradual return to work, as well as baby's follow-up: sleep, colic, development, weight gain, introduction of solid foods. This extended follow-up aims to prevent service gaps often experienced after birth.

Can a partner or relative take part in consultations and courses?

Yes, absolutely. We encourage the presence of a partner or support person for nursing consultations, prenatal classes, and postpartum follow-up appointments. Partner involvement in the perinatal journey promotes better emotional support, more comprehensive preparation for the baby's arrival, and a shared sense of parental responsibility from the beginning. Our nurses adapt their explanations to include both parents and answer everyone's questions in a supportive and non-judgmental environment.

Is perinatal support covered by the RAMQ or private insurance?

Certain medical services included in prenatal care—such as prescribed blood tests or medical consultations with a participating physician—may be covered by the RAMQ. Specialized nursing consultations, prenatal classes, and postnatal support are considered private services, but may be eligible for reimbursement by group or private insurance depending on your policy. We recommend checking with your insurer. To learn more about our packages and terms, consult our Pricing section or contact us directly.
