Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions - Perinatal support

Preconception, pregnancy monitoring, prenatal classes, postpartum, postnatal depression, breastfeeding, teleconsultation - clear answers about our complete perinatal support at Clinique Omicron, accessible without medical referral, in clinic, at home or online in Quebec.

When can I start benefiting from your perinatal support?

Our support begins with preconception - even before pregnancy. If you are planning a pregnancy, we offer a preconception health check-up including nutritional advice, adjustment of certain medications and recommendation of folic acid. As soon as pregnancy is confirmed, ideally before 10 weeks, nursing care begins, covering all five stages: preconception, 1st trimester, 2nd and 3rd trimesters, post-delivery and 4th postnatal trimester (up to 12 months after birth).

Do I need a medical referral or already be a patient at the clinic?

No. Perinatal support at Clinique Omicron is available without a medical referral and without having to be a regular patient at the clinic. It is open to anyone who is pregnant or planning to become pregnant, regardless of whether they already have a family doctor or obstetrical care. Our support is complementary and can be integrated into your existing care - you don't have to choose between the two.

What prenatal tests and screening are performed at the clinic?

Clinique Omicron offers complete biological monitoring throughout pregnancy: blood glucose, complete blood count (CBC), blood group, infection screening (HIV, hepatitis B, rubella, streptococcus B), prenatal screening for trisomy 21, 18 and 13, as well as routine tests per trimester. Blood tests can be performed in the clinic or at home, depending on your preference. For ultrasounds - fertility monitoring, pelvic evaluation, follicular monitoring - our gynecological ultrasound services are also available on site.

What do the prenatal courses offered at Clinique Omicron cover?

Our prenatal courses cover a wide range of topics to prepare you for your baby's arrival: pain management (natural and pharmacological approaches such as epidurals), developing a birth plan, preparing for vaginal birth after caesarean section (VBAC), newborn care, breastfeeding, and preparing for a planned caesarean section. The courses are available in-clinic and online, so that people anywhere in Quebec can benefit. The partner or a close relative can also take part.

What breastfeeding support services do you offer?

Our perinatal nurses offer comprehensive breastfeeding support, either in the clinic or at home. This includes assistance with latching on in the first few days after delivery, lactation evaluation, management of common difficulties (pain, engorgement, breast pumping, insufficient baby weight gain), as well as support for gentle weaning and the transition to mixed feeding or solids. Post-partum follow-up at home is available for new mothers wishing to be accompanied in their home environment.

What are the warning signs that require urgent consultation during pregnancy?

Seek prompt attention if you experience any of these symptoms: intense or persistent abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, severe headaches accompanied by visual disturbances or swelling of the face and hands (possible signs of preeclampsia), decreased or absent fetal movements, contractions before 37 weeks, fever, intense urinary burning, or loss of amniotic fluid. Our nurses are available to assess your symptoms quickly in clinic or by teleconsultation.

How does Clinique Omicron support perinatal mental health?

Perinatal mental health is a central component of our support. Our specialized nurses are trained to recognize signs of emotional distress, anxiety, antenatal and post-partum depression, as well as mental overload related to parenthood. If necessary, they coordinate referrals to our mental health partners (psychologists, social workers), while respecting confidentiality. If you're experiencing symptoms of post-partum depression - persistent sadness, feelings of disconnection, intense exhaustion - don't wait to seek help: these conditions are common and treatable.

Do you offer telemedicine perinatal consultations?

Yes, our perinatal teleconsultation service is available throughout Quebec via a secure and confidential platform. You can consult our specialized nurses from the comfort of your own home for pregnancy follow-up, postnatal questions, breastfeeding consultations, perinatal anxiety management or baby monitoring (sleep, colic, development, introduction of solids). Home consultations are also available for people who prefer to be accompanied in their own home environment.

What is the role of the perinatal nurse in relation to the obstetrician?

The perinatal nurse plays a complementary role to that of the obstetrician or attending physician. She provides continuous, personalized follow-up between medical visits, answers your questions on a daily basis, assesses your symptoms, provides education on the stages of pregnancy, detects signs of complications and coordinates referrals as needed. Our network includes obstetricians, nutritionists, osteopaths, social workers and psychologists - we mobilize the right experts at the right time, to complement your regular medical care.

How far does the clinic's postnatal care extend?

Our postnatal care extends to 12 months after delivery - what we call the extended 4th trimester. It covers the mother's physical recovery (postpartum visit, healing, return from childbirth), postnatal mental health, breastfeeding support, postpartum contraception, gradual return to work, as well as monitoring the baby: sleep, colic, development, weight gain, introduction of solid foods. This prolonged follow-up is designed to avoid the breakdown in services often experienced after birth.

Can a partner or relative take part in consultations and courses?

Yes, absolutely. We encourage the presence of a partner or close caregiver at nursing consultations, prenatal classes and post-partum follow-up appointments. Involving the partner in the perinatal journey promotes better emotional support, more thorough preparation for the baby's arrival and shared parenting from the outset. Our nurses tailor their explanations to include both parents and answer questions from both in a caring, non-judgmental space.

Is perinatal support covered by RAMQ or private insurance?

Some medical services included in prenatal follow-up - such as prescribed blood tests or medical consultations with a participating physician - may be covered by RAMQ. Specialized nursing consultations, prenatal classes and postnatal accompaniment are private services, but may be eligible for reimbursement by group or private insurance, depending on your policy. We recommend that you check with your insurer. To find out more about our packages and terms and conditions, consult our Pricing section or contact us directly.
