Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions - Nursing

Nursing autonomy, role of the RPN, homecare services, group prescriptions, RAMQ coverage - clear answers about our in-clinic and homecare nursing services at Clinique Omicron, across Quebec.

Do I need a doctor's prescription to see a nurse?

No. Thanks to group prescriptions regulated by the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ), our nurses can assess your condition, prescribe certain medications and carry out diagnostic examinations without prior medical consultation. You don't need a family doctor or an individual prescription to have direct access to most of our nursing services, whether in the clinic or at home.

What types of nursing care are offered at Clinique Omicron?

Clinique Omicron offers more than ten types of nursing care: blood sampling and analysis (blood, urine, stool, ITSS), vaccination and vaccination record updating, contraception and sexual health consultations (Pap tests, Nexplanon implant), wound care and specialized dressings, chronic disease monitoring (diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular), specialized MAPA and Holter monitoring, intravenous catheters, ostomy care, oncology and palliative care, post-operative follow-up, as well as breastfeeding support and nursing education.

What's the difference between a nurse clinician and a specialized nurse practitioner (SNP)?

The nurse clinician plays an advanced role in assessment, curative and preventive care, and the coordination of care according to collective prescriptions. The Specialized Nurse Practitioner (SNP) goes a step further: holding a specialty certificate recognized by the OIIQ, she is empowered to diagnose illnesses, prescribe medications and treatments, perform advanced medical examinations (gynecological, digital rectal exams), and initiate treatments for a wide range of conditions - without a physician necessarily being involved at every stage.

Do you offer home nursing care?

Yes, our OIIQ-certified nurses come to your home, seniors' residence (RPA) or workplace, available as early as 7 a.m., 7 days a week, depending on availability. In-home services include blood sampling, wound care and dressings, vaccinations, ITSS screening, post-operative follow-up, intravenous catheterization, ostomy care, MAPA and Holter CardioStat, as well as palliative care. This service is ideal for people with reduced mobility, the elderly or convalescing patients.

Can your nurses prescribe drugs or tests?

Yes, within their scope of practice. Nurses working under group orders can initiate certain medications, blood tests and other diagnostic tests without an individual physician's order. Specialized Nurse Practitioners (SNPs) also have the authority to prescribe medications, make diagnoses and initiate medical treatments - with autonomy comparable to that of a physician for many common conditions.

Do you offer nurse monitoring of chronic illnesses?

Yes, Clinique Omicron offers personalized nursing follow-up for patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. This follow-up includes ambulatory blood pressure measurement (24-hour ABPM), blood glucose monitoring, follow-up blood tests, medication management according to group prescriptions, and nutrition and lifestyle counseling. Follow-up is coordinated with the attending physician, if you have one.

Are nursing consultations covered by RAMQ?

Some services may be covered by RAMQ when performed in collaboration with participating physicians or within a specific clinical setting. However, many specialized nursing services - including home care, certain private clinic consultations and procedures not covered by public packages - are billed directly to the patient. Most group and private insurance plans reimburse all or part of this care. See our Pricing section or contact us for details, depending on the service you require.

Do you offer the Nexplanon contraceptive implant?

Yes, Clinique Omicron offers evaluation, insertion and removal of the Nexplanon contraceptive implant, performed by a nurse specially trained for this procedure. The Nexplanon implant is a long-lasting (up to 3 years), highly effective subcutaneous contraceptive, inserted under the skin of the arm. Post-procedure follow-up is included. Consult us to assess whether this contraceptive method is suitable for your health profile and preferences.

Can your nurses perform wound care and remove stitches?

Yes, our nurse clinicians provide comprehensive wound care in the clinic and at home: wound assessment and cleansing, specialized dressings (hydrocolloids, absorbent dressings, etc.), stitch and staple removal, post-operative follow-up and wound-healing monitoring. In the case of chronic or complex wounds - leg ulcers, diabetic wounds, pressure sores - an individualized treatment plan is drawn up in line with best integument care practices.

Do you offer nursing services in seniors' residences?

Yes, Clinique Omicron offers mobile nursing services for seniors' residences (RPAs) and other collective living environments. Our nurses travel directly on site to provide the care required: blood tests, vaccinations, wound care, monitoring of chronic conditions, taking vital signs and ABPM, injections and administering medication as prescribed. This service saves residents the often-difficult commute and ensures continuity of care in their usual living environment.

Do you offer breastfeeding support and post-delivery follow-up?

Yes, our nurses offer breastfeeding support and post-partum follow-up to accompany new mothers in the weeks following childbirth. This support includes assessment of latching, lactation advice, management of common discomforts (engorgement, cracks, milk let-down), as well as monitoring of maternal recovery and newborn development. This service can be provided in the clinic or at home, depending on your needs and availability.

Is advanced nursing care such as catheterization and palliative care available?

Yes, Clinique Omicron offers advanced nursing care for patients with complex needs: management and maintenance of intravenous catheters (including PICC Line and Port-a-Cath), ostomy care, supportive oncology care, and palliative and end-of-life home care. These services are provided by experienced nurses, in close coordination with the attending physician and other professionals involved in the patient's care, to ensure optimum continuity and quality of care.
