When should you go for screening, even if you have no symptoms?

Most STIs cause no visible symptoms. Screening is recommended after unprotected sex, a new partner, stopping using condoms, multiple partners, before pregnancy, or if a partner has a known STBBI. Without symptoms, it's the only reliable way to know your status.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions - STBBI screening and contraception

Confidentiality, turnaround times, types of tests, contraception, home screening - clear answers about our STBBI screening and contraception services at Clinique Omicron, in your clinic or at home.

Do I need a prescription for an STBBI screening?

No, you don't need to bring a prescription. However, a short consultation with one of our health professionals is necessary to assess your situation and, if necessary, issue the prescription required to perform the appropriate samples or tests. This step usually takes little time, and can be done on the same day as your screening.

What STIs are screened at Clinique Omicron?

We offer comprehensive screening covering a wide range of sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections: HIV (antigen/antibody), hepatitis B and C, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea (urethral, cervical, pharyngeal and rectal depending on practices), genital herpes, human papillomavirus (HPV) and trichomoniasis. The test is tailored to your history, practices and risk profile at the time of consultation.

What types of samples are required for screening?

The types of samples taken vary according to the STBBI targeted. They may include blood samples (HIV, hepatitis, syphilis, herpes), urine samples (chlamydia, gonorrhea), or genital, pharyngeal or rectal swabs, depending on declared sexual practices. All samples are taken by a nurse in a professional and confidential manner, in around 15 to 20 minutes.

When is it recommended to have an STBBI screening?

Screening is recommended after unprotected sexual intercourse, when changing partners, if you experience unusual symptoms (discharge, burning, lesions), as part of pregnancy planning, or as a regular preventive measure if you have several partners. Some STIs, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea, can remain asymptomatic for long periods - screening remains the only reliable way to detect them.

Is it possible to test for STBBI at home?

Yes, Clinique Omicron offers a home sampling service for those who prefer discretion or have travel constraints. Our nurses come to your home or workplace, early in the morning if necessary. This service is particularly appreciated for its convenience and level of confidentiality. Contact the clinic or consult our Contact Us section to schedule a visit in your area.

What happens if I receive a positive result?

In the event of a positive result, our team will contact you promptly and confidentially to inform you and discuss the next steps. A doctor will refer you to the appropriate treatment for the infection identified - antibiotics, antivirals or specialized follow-up as appropriate. We can also support you in notifying your partner(s) if this is appropriate, in full respect of your privacy.

Is SSTI screening confidential?

Yes, confidentiality is guaranteed at every stage. Your results are protected by medical professional secrecy and are communicated only to you, except in the case of a strictly defined legal obligation (certain STBBIs must be reported to the MSSS, without disclosing your identity to third parties). No results are passed on to your employer, your family or your insurer without your explicit consent.

How soon will I receive my results?

Results are generally available within 24 hours of sampling, and are sent to you securely. Some tests can be processed the same day. More specialized analyses - such as certain cultures or serologies - may take slightly longer. In all cases, you will be informed of the expected turnaround time during your consultation.

Is SSTI screening covered by private insurance or RAMQ?

Most private insurances cover all or part of STI testing - we recommend that you check the details of your coverage directly with your insurer. RAMQ coverage varies according to the clinical context and the type of test prescribed. Consult our Rates section or contact us to find out the fees applicable to your situation.

Do you offer contraception and family planning services?

Yes, the Omicron Clinic offers comprehensive contraception consultations: prescription of oral contraceptives (pills), injectable hormonal contraceptives or patches, emergency contraception (morning-after pill), and IUD insertion (hormonal or copper-bearing IUDs). Our doctors discuss with you the options best suited to your health profile, preferences and lifestyle, without judgment.

Do you also perform pregnancy tests?

Yes, the Clinique Omicron performs in-clinic pregnancy tests (quantitative or qualitative beta-hCG blood tests), which are more reliable and detectable earlier than urine tests available in pharmacies. Medical follow-up can be scheduled according to your needs, whether for prenatal support, referral to appropriate resources or a family planning consultation.

Is it possible to go for STD screening without having any symptoms?

Absolutely, and strongly recommended. Many STIs - including chlamydia, gonorrhea, early-stage HIV and hepatitis C - often progress without symptoms for months or years. Preventive screening is the only way to detect them early, initiate prompt treatment if necessary and avoid transmission to your partners. You don't need to have any symptoms to consult us.
