Minor surgery refers to minimally invasive medical procedures performed under local anesthesia that do not require hospitalization. At the Omicron Clinic, we perform more than 20 types of procedures: excision of sebaceous cysts and lipomas, removal of moles, abscess drainage, skin biopsies, treatment of ingrown toenails, wound suturing, wart removal, removal of skin tags, removal of subcutaneous foreign bodies, and much more.
The consultation includes a medical evaluation of the injury or condition, confirmation that surgery is indicated, and an explanation of the procedure. If treatment is indicated, it can be performed the same day in our sterile procedure room under local anesthesia. The procedure typically takes 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the type of surgery. The patient goes home the same day with detailed postoperative instructions.
No. All procedures are performed under local anesthesia: you will feel only a slight prick when the anesthetic is injected. The treated area then becomes completely numb for the duration of the procedure. Some mild post-operative tenderness may occur in the following 24 to 48 hours, which is generally well managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
No. Anyone with a skin lesion, cyst, ingrown toenail, wart, or any other superficial condition can visit the Omicron Clinic directly without a prior doctor’s referral. Appointments are generally available within 24 hours at our locations in Quebec.
Fasting is not required for the vast majority of minor surgeries. However, it is important to inform your doctor of all the medications you are taking, especially blood thinners and aspirin, which may require a temporary adjustment. In certain specific cases, special instructions will be provided during the initial consultation.
Minor surgical procedures are performed by a physician trained and experienced in minor procedures, in a sterile, fully equipped operating room. Postoperative follow-up care—such as changing dressings, removing stitches, and monitoring the wound—can be provided by a registered nurse on our team.
After the procedure, it is recommended that you keep the wound clean and dry according to the instructions provided, avoid strenuous physical activity for 48 to 72 hours, and watch for signs of infection (excessive redness, swelling, fever, discharge). Stitches are removed depending on the type of wound, usually between 5 and 14 days. In most cases, you can resume light activities as early as the next day.
The risks are generally low. Possible complications include a local infection, minor bleeding, a reaction to the local anesthetic, or poor healing. These risks are minimized through the use of sterile instruments, strict aseptic techniques, and adherence to postoperative instructions. The doctor will explain all the risks specific to your procedure during the preoperative consultation.
Contact the clinic if you notice any signs of infection: excessive or increasing redness, unusual swelling, warmth at the wound site, pus discharge, or an abnormal odor. A fever higher than 38.5 °C should also prompt you to seek medical attention promptly. Heavy bleeding or severe pain that is not relieved by prescribed pain medication are also reasons to contact the clinic immediately.
Cosmetic or non-urgent procedures performed in a private clinic are generally not covered by the RAMQ. Receipts for private insurance are provided after each procedure—please check your coverage with your insurer. Yes, depending on the nature of the excised lesion. For any skin biopsy, excision of a suspicious mole, or lesion requiring characterization, the specimen is routinely sent for histopathological analysis. This step is essential to confirm the diagnosis, ensure that the lesion is benign, and verify that the lesion was completely removed. Your doctor will share the results with you within the laboratory’s usual turnaround time.
Yes, in most cases. If the medical evaluation confirms that surgery is indicated and the condition does not require any special preparation, the procedure can be performed immediately after the consultation, without a second appointment. This approach allows for rapid access to care, without a hospital waiting period. Please wear loose-fitting clothing that allows access to the area to be treated during your visit.
