Understanding the Safe Maternity Program in Quebec

The Safe Maternity Program (PMSD) allows pregnant or breastfeeding workers to be withdrawn from their position when their condition presents a risk to themselves or their child. This program is administered by the CNESST under the Act respecting occupational health and safety.

Who can benefit from the PMSD?

Any pregnant or breastfeeding worker whose working conditions involve risks to her health, to that of the fetus or of the breastfed child may request a preventive withdrawal. The request is initiated by the worker with the support of a health professional.

Health sector: the most affected sector

The health care and social assistance sector accounts for nearly half of all preventive withdrawals in Quebec. Exposure to biological hazards, infectious agents, viruses, bacteria, is the main factor cited in withdrawal requests.

Medical follow-up during the withdrawal

Regular medical follow-up is recommended throughout the preventive withdrawal. This follow-up makes it possible to document the progress of the pregnancy, adjust recommendations and prepare the return to work after childbirth or the end of breastfeeding.

Are you pregnant or breastfeeding and need medical follow-up or a certificate for your preventive withdrawal? Clinique Omicron offers gynecology and pregnancy follow-up consultations at its service points in Quebec.
