Frequently Asked Questions about Psychiatry
Depression, anxiety, adult ADHD, bipolar disorder, medication, access times — everything you need to know about our psychiatric services at Clinique Omicron.
Consult a psychiatrist if you experience persistent sadness, intense anxiety or panic attacks, significant difficulty concentrating at work or in your studies, chronic sleep disorders, intrusive or obsessive thoughts, significant mood swings, or if your general practitioner recommends a specialized evaluation. A psychiatrist can also help if medication prescribed by your doctor is not yielding the desired results or if you are seeking a formal diagnosis (ADHD, bipolar disorder, personality disorder).
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (medical degree + residency in psychiatry) who can make psychiatric diagnoses, prescribe medication, order blood tests, and conduct health assessments. They manage mental health disorders from a medical perspective. A psychologist (PhD or PsyD) specializes in psychological assessment and psychotherapy but cannot prescribe medication in Quebec. The two professionals are often complementary: the psychiatrist manages the medical and pharmacological aspects, while the psychologist manages the therapeutic aspects.
Yes. ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) is frequently diagnosed in adulthood and often goes unrecognized for years. Our psychiatrists and nurse practitioners in mental health conduct a comprehensive clinical evaluation including developmental history, current symptoms, and their functional impact. If the diagnosis is confirmed, pharmacological treatment (stimulants or non-stimulants) is offered, combined with behavioral strategies. Formal neuropsychological evaluation may be recommended in some cases to confirm the diagnosis.
Yes. Our psychiatrists and mental health nurse practitioners (NPs) can issue work absences when the mental health condition clinically warrants it. The duration and conditions of the work absence are determined during the assessment, depending on the nature and severity of the disorder. Medical letters or documentation for insurers can also be provided. In the case of a work absence related to a work-related illness or injury, coordination with the CNESST may be necessary.
The first consultation (60 to 90 minutes) is an in-depth assessment meeting. The psychiatrist or NP collects your medical, psychiatric, and family history, current symptoms, daily functioning, and treatment history. Standardized questionnaires may be used. Following this evaluation, a diagnosis (or diagnostic impression) is discussed with you, along with a treatment plan proposing medication, follow-up, and referrals to other professionals deemed relevant.
Yes. Major depression, dysthymia, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social phobia, OCD, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are among the most frequently treated disorders in our psychiatry department. Management includes diagnostic evaluation, prescription of antidepressants, anxiolytics, or other medications as indicated, and close monitoring. We also coordinate care with psychologists or therapists to offer combined pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment when indicated.
The specialized nurse practitioner (NP) in mental health is a healthcare professional with a specialized master's degree that grants them the right to diagnose, prescribe medications (including controlled substances under certain conditions), and provide autonomous psychiatric follow-up. They work in collaboration with physicians and psychiatrists on the team. The mental health NP is a valuable resource for reducing wait times and providing quality follow-up for conditions such as ADHD, depression, anxiety, and mood disorders.
Based on clinical indication, our professionals can prescribe antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, etc.), anxiolytics, mood stabilizers (lithium, valproate, lamotrigine), antipsychotics, ADHD medications (methylphenidate, amphetamines, atomoxetine), hypnotics for insomnia, and other molecules as needed. The choice of medication takes into account your profile, history, preferences, and potential side effects. Follow-up includes regular adjustments and blood tests if necessary.
Psychiatric consultations in private practice are generally not covered by the RAMQ if the psychiatrist is non-participating or disengaged from the public system. In such cases, the fees are your responsibility. Many group insurance providers offer partial or full reimbursement for psychiatric consultations – check your coverage. Prescribed medication is covered according to your drug insurance plan (RAMQ or private). Consultations with an NP in mental health may have a different status depending on their agreement. Consult our Pricing section or contact us for more details.
Yes. Our psychiatric services are intended for adolescents (from around 14 years old, depending on available professionals) and adults. The psychiatric evaluation of adolescents takes into account development, school, family, and social context, as well as the specificities of this life stage. Common disorders encountered in adolescents include ADHD, depression, anxiety, emerging personality disorder, eating disorders, and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) with psychiatric comorbidities. Parental involvement is often encouraged depending on age and context.
