Understanding Surgical Waitlists in Quebec

Each year, tens of thousands of Quebecers wait for surgery in the public system. Wait times vary considerably depending on the specialty, region, and complexity of the case. Understanding this data helps in better planning your care and exploring available options.

How are the deadlines calculated?

The MSSS publishes waiting list data by surgical specialty and sociosanitary region (SSR) each quarter. Three timeframes are distinguished: less than 6 months, between 6 and 12 months, and over one year.

These figures represent the number of patients on the waiting list at the time of the report, not the actual average waiting time. A patient can be removed from the list without having had surgery.

Most affected specialties

Orthopedics and ophthalmology account for the largest proportion of patients on waiting lists provincially. These two specialties often represent over 40 % of the total lists in several regions.

ENT, urology, and gynecology also show significant wait times, particularly in remote regions far from major centers.

Significant regional disparities

Montreal, Montérégie, and the Capitale-Nationale have the largest number of patients waiting, partly due to their denser populations. However, remote regions often suffer from proportionally longer delays due to a lack of locally available specialists.

Are you awaiting surgery or would you like a second medical opinion? Our doctors and nurse practitioners are available for in-person appointments and telemedicine consultations.
